Resources for Parents

Before starting classes at Michigan Tech, students who wish to change their major should email mtu4u@mtu.edu or call 888-688-1885. Their application will then be reviewed to confirm they meet the admissions requirements for the new program.

After the drop/add period, students should work directly with their academic advisor to request changes to their program of study.

The Registrar's Office creates initial student schedules in mid-July based on major, course placement results, AP/IB/CLEP scores, and transfer credits received.

This initial schedule may not reflect full-time status (12 or more credits). Prior to the start of classes, students can add courses (activities, Essential Education, electives) to complete their fall schedule, or make changes after consulting with their academic advisor. Changes can also be made by contacting the Registrar's Office at 906-487-2319 or schedule@mtu.edu.

Transfer Students

• Fewer than 30 credit hours: Schedules are created by the Registrar's Office in mid-July, using the same criteria above (major, course placement results, AP/IB/CLEP scores, transfer credits).
• 30 or more credit hours: Students register for classes with the help of their academic advisor.

All students are required to have a portable computing device. Please visit our Computing Device Requirement page for device specifications. Having the right device will help you succeed across a range of class scenarios throughout your college career. 

Course placement is based on a variety of factors. Your student will be asked to submit test scores (ACT, SAT), AP test results, dual enrollment transcripts, and/or placement assessments. Specific instructions will be sent by email and discussed during the summer orientation. You can remind your student to submit their materials as soon as they are available to avoid delays.

Account access for parents, also known as Guest Access, allows Michigan Tech students to grant individuals access to their confidential records. Guest Access is requested by the student through their Experience web platform.

Students may grant access to any or all of the following:

• electronic bill notification
• tuition bill and associated holds
• student’s emergency contacts
• financial aid awards
• unofficial academic transcripts
• midterm grades (first-year students only)
• term end grades
• class schedules and course details

Students can visit the Enroll page or their Husky Portal.

Mid-July: Watch for an email from MTU (sent to your student’s MTU email account) with instructions on how to join the permit waitlist and purchase a permit.

Once registration opens, students can register their vehicle and purchase a Residential Parking Permit online through the Michigan Tech Parking Portal, found on the Transportation Services website.

All new students are required to attend both Summer Huskies Orientation in May/June and Fall Orientation the week before the start of the fall semester.
