Starting in the appropriate entry-level math course is critical to your success at Michigan Tech. We aim to place you into the course that will provide you with the best opportunity to complete your degree in four years. For most majors, calculus is your recommended entry-level math course.
Ideally, we want you to start in precalculus or higher so you can take co-requisite courses. For example, engineering majors need precalculus or higher to take engineering fundamentals.
Placement in Your Initial Math Course
Scheduling for the Fall incoming class will start in early July. Since students' schedules are built around their entry-level math course, we should receive your qualifying scores by June 30th.
We will place you in your entry-level math course based on your highest qualifying score if you feel this placement is correct, no additional action is requred. Options include:
Math Placement Score |
Action Required |
---|---|
ACT or SAT math score |
Request to have scores sent to Michigan Tech. |
AP, IB or CLEP credit |
Send your official scores from the College Board or International Baccalaureate Programs. Some scores may not be available until June 30th, but this will not delay your fall schedule. |
College-level math credit (Minimum grade 2.0 / C) |
Request to have the official transcript(s) sent by the college/university. If you are taking a math class that ends after June 30th, send a transcript showing you are registered for the course. You will be scheduled when the transfer credit is awarded. |

ALEKS Math Placement |
Challenging Your Math Placement
If you feel your current math placement is incorrect, you can challenge it by taking the online ALEKS math placement assessment. The ALEKS can also be used if you do not have any of the score options. If you have an SAT or ACT score and choose to take the ALEKS, the highest score will determine your math placement.
