
Expectations
- It's free to apply to Michigan Tech! There is currently no application fee.
- Please allow 1-2 weeks after documents are submitted before your online applicant portal is updated.
- Once you have applied for admission and submitted all of your required documents (see application requirements below), you can expect to receive an admissions decision within 3-6 weeks. All documents should be emailed to mtu4u@mtu.edu.
- All questions and inquiries should be emailed to international@mtu.edu.
Deadlines
- Applications are due by April 1.
- All application and post-acceptance documents are due by May 1.
- Accepted students who have met the F-1 post-acceptance requirements (see below for details) will be issued an I-20 for visa application sometime between March-June. No I-20 documents will be issued after June 1.

Email official secondary school transcripts or attested marks sheets (must include the most recent three years of grades) to mtu4u@mtu.edu. If you have attended multiple schools in the last three years, request official transcripts from each school. English translations must accompany all documents. All transcripts must be sent from your school directly to Michigan Tech (we cannot accept them if you email them to us yourself).

- Official transcripts of all colleges/universities previously attended or currently attending. English translations must accompany all documents.
- For colleges/universities outside the US or Canada, you must submit official transcripts to one of the pre-approved credential evaluators below for a course-by-course evaluation. Students must contact the course evaluation service on their own and pay for the evaluation to be done and sent to Michigan Tech.
Transfer Credit Process
To apply for international transfer credit, you must provide a syllabus or course description (in English), for each course taken outside of the US. You must include:
- Course name
- Course number
- Start and end date of each course
- Description of each course and the topics it covered
- Textbook titles for each course, including author, edition, and date of publication
- Transfer credit is determined by the appropriate academic department for equivalent content.
- Michigan Tech reserves the right to award transfer credit following its own policies and procedures.
- Only courses comparable to Michigan Tech courses are eligible, and a minimum US equivalent grade of a C or higher must be earned.
- Courses listed on official transcripts with no grade or score, with grades of C- or below (D, F, below 1.0 on four-point scale), Pass/Fail scores, Audit, or for 0 credit hours are not eligible for transfer credit.
- To ensure proper credit, submit all documents to the Admissions Office at least four months prior to your intended start date. Credits are only evaluated if you have been admitted and the enrollment deposit is paid.
- Current Michigan Tech students who want to take a course in their home country or other countries should work with Transfer Services staff in the Registrar's Office before they plan to take the course.
With the permission of your home university, you may apply to Michigan Tech for up to one year of non-degree-seeking studies as an exchange student.

Post-Acceptance Required Documents
To receive an I-20, you must show proof of funds for one year of studies. After you are accepted to Michigan Tech, access to documents will be available in your Application Portal. Scan your documents and use your Application Portal to upload the following required documents to us. Include your student ID number (M number) on each document.
- A completed Affidavit of Financial Support (F-1). It must be dated no later than 12 months before the semester start date.
- Supporting proof of funds documents showing sufficient funds for at least one full year of studies, dated no later than 12 months before the semester start date. Acceptable proofs include bank statements, scholarship letters, and loan letters.
- A copy of your passport photo page.
- For students already in the US on an F-1 visa, a Transfer In form is also required.
To receive a DS-2019, you must show proof of funds for your duration of studies. After you are accepted to Michigan Tech, access to documents will be available in your Application Portal. Scan your documents and use your Application Portal to upload the following required documents to us. Include your student ID number (M number) on each document.

If you are currently in the U.S. on a dependent visa status such as H-4, L-2, or J-2, and plan to keep* that status as you begin your studies at Michigan Tech, you do not need to submit financial documents, but should still submit the following through your Application Portal:
- A copy of your passport photo page.
*Note that you can only study on your dependent visa until you turn 21 or your parent's visa status changes, whichever comes first. Well in advance of losing your status and your ability to study, you should review the process for changing your status to F-1, and work with the International Programs and Services office when you are ready to do so.
