Transfer Students

How do I prepare to transfer to Michigan Tech?

Are you planning to transfer into to the Computer Science (SCS) or Software Engineering (SSEN) program at Michigan Tech from another college or university? Here’s some advice that will help you prepare for the transition:

  • We encourage students pursuing a Computer Science or Software Engineering degree to transfer to Michigan Tech after one year of study to ensure graduation within four years.
    • Two-year transfer students may not be able to schedule enough core courses in their major to get a full course load in some semesters. (This is due to the abundance of general education, pre-calculus math, and lab science courses and lack of early-on core required courses.)
    • If you have already completed two years at another college or university, you may wish to start during the summer semester and catch up on computer science courses or plan to stay on campus and take the required courses during the following summer. Summer courses begin in early May.
    • Please see the 1+3 Year Plan for SCS or the 1+3 Year Plan for SSEN for more information.
  • Students who transfer with more than 30 credits, depending on how close they follow the recommended Michigan Tech flowchart plan, can complete their degree in six to eight semesters. The most common time to degree is seven semesters, which is due to the pre-requisite chains in core CS classes.

Which courses should I take?

We recommend that you take the following courses (or equivalents) before arriving at Michigan Tech:

You can also take any courses equivalent to the following:

What courses should I avoid taking?

Do not take more than 9 credits of lower-level HASS elective classes. Six credits must be at the 3000 level or higher.

Check Michigan Tech course equivalencies for your college courses. If they are not listed here, contact Transfer Services (906-487-3323) to request course transfer credit evaluations.
