Computer Science
The BS in Computer Science program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission's General Criteria and Program Criteria for Computer Science.
Within a few years after graduation, graduates of the program are expected to:
- PEO1: Contribute to substantial computing projects by employing theories and practices of computing, mathematics, statistics, and programming languages;
- PEO2: Engage in continuous learning and professional development to maintain technical competence and adapt to evolving technologies and challenges;
- PEO3: Take on increased responsibilities in planning and coordinating team efforts to construct effective and financially sound computing solutions;
- PEO4: Make ethical, informed, responsible, and risk-aware decisions in professional settings.
Graduates of the program will have an ability to:
- SO1: Analyze a complex computing problem and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
- SO2: Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
- SO3: Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
- SO4: Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
- SO5: Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline.
- SO6: Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions. [CS]
Software Engineering
The BS in Software Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission's General Criteria and Program Criteria for Software Engineering.
Within a few years after graduation, graduates of the program are expected to:
- PEO1: Contribute to substantial computing projects by employing theories and practices of computing, mathematics, statistics, and software engineering;
- PEO2: Engage in continuous learning and professional development to maintain technical competence and adapt to evolving technologies and challenges;
- PEO3: Take on increased responsibilities in planning and coordinating team efforts to construct effective and financially sound computing solutions;
- PEO4: Make ethical, informed, responsible, and risk-aware decisions in professional settings.
Graduates of the program will have:
- SO1: An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
- SO2: An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
- SO3: An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
- SO4: An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
- SO5: An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
- SO6: An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
- SO7: An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
Cybersecurity
The BS in Cybersecurity program is jointly offered by the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Applied Computing. The program is currently pursuing ABET accreditation.
Michigan Tech is a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (NCAE–CD) and in Cyber Research (NCAE-R), designated by the National Security Agency (NSA). The BS in Cybersecurity degree is the university’s validated NCAE-CD Program of Study (PoS).
Within a few years after graduation, graduates of the program are expected to:
- PEO 1: Achieve successful professional engagement and progression in Cybersecurity or related domains by applying appropriate technical knowledge and professional skills.
- PEO 2: Contribute effectively to cross-functional teams to analyze and solve complex technical or organizational problems.
- PEO 3: Demonstrate professionalism through ethical practice, effective communication, and responsible decision-making in their professional activities.
- PEO 4: Engage in continuous learning and professional development to maintain technical competence and adapt to evolving technologies and challenges.
Graduates of the program will have an ability to:
