Home Away From Home

Houghton, Michigan. Home to Michigan's R1 flagship technological research university and the safest public college in the state.

For most Huskies, it's a long way from home (a nine-hour drive, on average). But once you get here, you'll see that this place is far from ordinary. Houghton becomes a home away from home—and with your classmates, you'll find a second family.

Meet some of our current students to see what this community means to them—and what it could mean to you, too.

"What was it like moving to the UP?" Huskies talk about being far from home at Michigan Tech.

Why did you choose Michigan Tech over closer schools?

I chose Tech because it felt like home. When I toured, everyone was so nice—and that’s still true after becoming a student. Everyone wants to support each other. I also really liked all the opportunities to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

What is there to do on the weekends?

Depending on the time of year, there is plenty to do on weekends! Some take trips to Marquette. Some of us take hiking trips to the Porkies. Some go exploring in the Keweenaw. Outdoor recreation is huge in both the winter and summer months. Sometimes people even drive home on weekends (not so much me). In the winter, most stay near campus on weekends, but being so close to Houghton and Hancock makes adventuring easy even if you don’t have a car.

What is there to do in the winter?

I personally picked up snowboarding for the first time my freshmen year and it was a blast! Broomball is also a fantastic activity to be a part of during the wintertime. If neither are up your alley, then just going to hockey games is all sorts of fun, too! Tech's hockey games are like no other and I'll definitely be coming back up to Tech for future games well after I graduate!

If you don’t like the outdoors, what else is there to do?

While I do love nature and the outdoors, I also love going to sporting events and checking out local shops here in Houghton. I love finding hidden gem places that are special to the area.

How did you make friends at Michigan Tech?

I made my original friends during Orientation Week by going to events to put myself out there. I also made friends by signing up for clubs during K-Day. My favorite way to make friends not from my major, though, is by going to the events put on by clubs and departments on campus—it allows you to meet people you may not have any classes with.

What's it like living in the residence halls?

Living in the dorms is like going to a hotel with hundreds of people your age. It’s a boatload of fun to always have easy access to social space. Walking down the hall allows you to meet hundreds of people. It’s one of the most fun social experiences of your life!

How did you find your roommate?

I found my roommate through the roommate matching program and via the Instagram page created for incoming first-year students. Through the roommate matching process, we found that we had a lot in common, so we messaged over Instagram. To this day, my roommate is one of my closest friends!

What are the advantages of studying your major at a technological university?

As a social science major at a technological university, I get to work with a lot of people of different majors throughout many of my classes. It has been very beneficial to learn how to work in an interdisciplinary group of engineers and social scientists, and I think that it will really help me in my future career.

How did you find job opportunities on campus?

I’ve done many different jobs at Tech—working as a math coach in the Math Learning Center, a Residential Assistant for Housing, a research assistant for Dr. Chitta in the CEGE department, an Orientation Team Leader through the Wahtera Center, and with SYP during the summer of my first year. Tech holds an expo at the start of the year where you can meet some of the on-campus employers. For the Math Learning Center, I saw the job posting on a flyer and applied since I enjoy math and helping people. I found my internship in my second year during the Fall Career Fair.
