Management Major

Emily:

I chose Michigan Tech because the first time I visited here, I just felt at home. I like that it's a small community, but it's also large enough that you don't know everyone here. But it's nice seeing familiar faces everywhere you go.

I also competed in the College of Business Impact Scholarship my senior year of high school, so it's really awesome networking with other students before even attending Michigan Tech. So already from the start, I could see the awesome opportunities that Tech was going to provide me before I even was a student here. I've studied with friends that I met at the Impact Scholarship. I still hang out with a lot of them, so it's cool that I was able to build those bonds early on.

I'm a double major in marketing and management, so when I started here at Michigan Tech, I just came in with a marketing major, and I knew I wanted to add more to my degree, but I wasn't quite sure what. So my first semester, I just went in with my marketing major, took my classes, kind of was deciding from there what I liked, and I went to one of my professors that I had a good, close relationship with. The faculty here at the College of Business is awesome in helping with anything that we need, and he helped me decide that management was the right option for me.

And the management major is awesome here because you can really handcraft it to what you want it to be. You can just have the management major, or you can add a concentration in operations and supply chain, which is what I have, or you can add a concentration in entrepreneurship. So it's really cool that I could handcraft it and even add more flair to my degree.

I just love the community here at Michigan Tech. I know at a lot of big schools, some people feel that they blend into the crowd, and I've never felt that way at Michigan Tech. I've always felt like I have a place here, and being involved in so many organizations and clubs that I'm involved in, I have built so many great relationships here, and I've really had so many opportunities.

With a marketing and management major, there's so many different career paths that I can take and opportunities that are ahead of me. When people ask, "What do I want to do after college?" or "What kind of job or career path do I want?" it's kind of nice saying that I don't really know. And I like saying, "I don't know," because I've left the door open for myself for so many opportunities, and that's what my major here has provided for me.

I pride myself in being really passionate about everything I'm involved in here on campus because if you're not going to go into something with 100%, then why do it at all?

So I am on the Michigan Tech Women's Rugby Club here on campus. I am the public relations manager for the team, which is great because that also helps with my major. I get some management experience as a public relations manager. And then I am also involved in the Delta Zeta sorority here, and I'm in the American Marketing Association, which has really helped me fine-tune a lot of my marketing skills. I've competed in competitions. We got third place in one of our regional competitions, which was awesome. So I love just being involved in all the things I am here on campus. They've also given me so many great opportunities.

You're here to go to school first off, so you obviously want to focus on that. But when you're involved, you're able to create time management skills. Because I am involved so much, I have so many things on my calendar, but it really helps me to be focused on things and fine-tune those time management skills that I'll need in my future.

And it's awesome to be involved, not just in classes, but so many aspects on campus too, because like I said, you can create so many opportunities for yourself and truly meet so many people here on campus by being involved just outside of the classroom.

You don't have to be an engineer here to do great things or be involved. The College of Business is an accredited college. It's awesome. It's given me so many opportunities, and I love that it's a small college because it's able to give me even more opportunities than I thought I would get.
