Student organizations are permitted to conduct food sales or giveaways on-campus for organization fundraising or promotional purposes, if:
- The items are:
- Permissible per Michigan's Cottage Food Law,* or
- Ready-to-eat, individually packaged foods prepared by licensed service providers for individual consumption.** (This does not include foods fully or partially prepared on the day of sale, such as hot pizza slices or other fresh food)
- Not sold or given away in direct proximity to a campus food establishment.
For any other foods that organizations intend to provide on campus, the Catering Office must be contacted to discuss the food and beverage needs.
*Typical items distributed by student organizations that qualify under the Cottage Food Law include: breads, muffins, cookies, brownies, and cupcakes. All Cottage Food Law requirements must be met for these items to be distributed on campus, including packaging and labelling.
**Items that typically qualify as packaged food prepared by licensed service providers for individual consumption include: candy, popsicles, chips, granola bars, fruit snacks, and canned, shelf-stable beverages. Items must be individually labelled for distribution.
