Congratulations on your acceptance!
To get ready for the semester, please work through the following steps.
- Submit the following documents so we can process your I-20 or DS-2019:
- Affidavit of Financial Support (F-1 or J-1)
- Supporting proof of funds documents (for example: bank statements, scholarship letters) for the funds listed on the affidavit
- copy of passport information/photo page
- copy of visa page (if you are currently in the US on any visa type)
- Transfer In form (if you are currently on an F-1 visa)
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee online, once you have received your SEVIS information from us by email, or have received your I-20/DS-2019 by mail. You may not schedule your visa interview until this fee is paid.
- Apply for a visa
- Check with the US State Department for information about the application process, forms, and payment. (Does not apply to Canadian students.)
- Visa applications can be started as early as 120 days before the semester begins.

Note: If you are already in the US on a valid visa, some or all of the steps above may not be applicable to you. Your acceptance letter and MyMichiganTech checklist should best guide you with your specific situation, but contact us if you have any questions.
- All undergraduate students need to pay a $200 nonrefundable enrollment deposit to reserve their place in the incoming class and access the housing application. The deadline is July 1 for fall or November 1 for spring. Pay online with a credit card through your MyMichiganTech account.
- Access the housing application through your MyMichiganTech account once you have paid the enrollment deposit. First-year students are guaranteed housing, but the earlier you submit your application, the better chance you have to received your preferred housing!
- Transfer and exchange students need to apply for on-campus housing by March 1 for fall, or you can look for off-campus housing. Some apartments are in towns outside of Houghton and would not be recommended if you do not plan to have a car.
- All international students must have health insurance. You must pay for health insurance before you pay your student bill. If you are a sponsored student and are provided other health insurance by your sponsor, you need to request a waiver through Michigan Tech's health insurance partner.
- Calculate spending money. Most students spend about $2,000 per year for personal expenses. We recommend bringing no more than $500 with you during travel for safety reasons. Note that you will also need to purchase required textbooks and supplies soon after arrival, which can cost up to $1,200 per year.
- Research local banking options. Note: Most banks do not instantly exchange foreign currency.
- You can pay for your health insurance, fees, and student bill by wire transfer, online, or in person at the Student Service Center. Michigan Tech has partnered with Flywire and PayMyTuition to help international students pay quickly, securely, and in their home currency. Find out more about paying your bill.
- Submit your photo online so your HuskyCard is ready when get here. This Michigan Tech ID card is used for meals, building access, library use, and more.
- Periodically check your account for additional checklist items.
- Most offices and departments will email you important information through your Michigan Tech email. Please start checking this email weekly and also use it when you contact other offices with any questions you have.
