Registration for Academic Year 25/26 is now available in Experience via the Payments Page.

Deadline to enroll in insurance for Fall Semester is October 14, 2025.

Waiver Period is July 7, 2025 to October 14, 2025.

Michigan Tech requires all international students, graduate students and student athletes to carry comprehensive health insurance. Michigan Tech partners with UnitedHealthcare to offer a comprehensive health insurance plan.

Undergraduate domestic (U.S. citizen) students and off-campus students are not mandated to have comprehensive health insurance, but are welcome to utilize the comprehensive health plan offered through UnitedHealthcare. 

The Student Insurance Office, housed in Benefit Services of Human Resources, facilitates the Michigan Tech student health insurance plan and waivers for all students.

**Starting Fall 2025, the cost of health insurance for Supported Students will be $50 per student each academic year semester, or $100 for the full year of coverage. Students with an Assistantship/Supported status MUST take steps to enroll in the healthcare plan. Michigan Tech does not automatically enroll students into the UnitedHealthcare student plan. To do this, log into Experience, click the pay insurance link, and complete the steps to select the $50/$100 premium. If you are supported and see an amount besides $50/$100, check with your department about your status. 

How to Waive the Insurance Requirement

The deadline to submit a waiver for the Fall 2025 semester is 10/14/2025.

If you already have health insurance and your plan is a comprehensive health plan that meets coverage requirements of the university and is accepted in the U.S., you do not need to purchase the policy through the university. Undergraduate domestic (U.S. citizen) students and off-campus students are not mandated to have comprehensive health insurance.

Waivers are required on an annual basis.

Graduate Students and International Students:

To waive the insurance requirement, you MUST have a comprehensive health plan that meets the coverage requirements of the university and is accepted in the United States.

To submit a waiver for the 2025-2026 academic year, follow these steps:

  1. Have your M number and current insurance information available.
  2. Go to the UnitedHealthcare MTU Student Center.
  3. Follow the prompt and fill out your information.

Your waiver will not be approved if your policy is not comparable. Incomplete waivers will not be processed. You will receive an email from UnitedHealthcare confirming your approval or denial. Please note that waivers will take approximately five (5) business days to process.

Waiver Criteria Required Amounts and Coverage
Out-of-pocket maximum Maximum $9,000 per individual; $16,000 per family.
Deductible Maximum $5000 per individual; $10,000 per family.
Medical Benefits Must not contain a lifetime maximum.
Repatriation of remains (International Students) At least $25,000.
Medical Evacuation At least $50,000.
Prescription drugs Required coverage.
Mental health/psychotherapy Must cover inpatient and outpatient as any other illness.
Inpatient care, room & board, labs & x-ray, emergency room Must cover at least 80% of charges - in-network.
Alcoholism and substance abuse Must cover inpatient and outpatient as any other illness.

Maternity/pregnancy

(May not apply to all genders)

Must be treated as any other condition if conception occurs during policy.

Student Athlete Sport Related Injury

(Student Athletes only)

Must cover collegiate athletic injuries; Student athletes are not allowed to waive insurance coverage.

Other

Must cover waiver period (semester(s) enrolled in classes).

Other

(International Students)

Cannot require that the insured person return to home country for treatment.

Assistantships/Supported Students

Students who are fully supported (i.e. receive a stipend and tuition) MUST still enroll in the student insurance plan to be covered under the UnitedHealthcare student health plan.

Types of Assistantships/Supported Students include:

  • Teaching Assistantships: GTA/GTI
  • Research Assistantships: GRA/GA
  • Administrative Assistantships: GADE/GADI

Dental and Vision premiums are not covered by Michigan Tech. Supported graduate students are responsible for paying the full premium amount(s) when enrolling in a Dental and/or Vision plan.

Spouses and dependents of supported graduate students enrolled in the Michigan Tech student health insurance plan are eligible for a reimbursement of 50% of the premium. Reimbursement forms can be found here.
