Mechanical Engineering

Drive innovation.

Mechanical engineers apply the principles of motion, energy, force, and materials to design products that are safe, efficient, reliable, and cost effective. Learn to design components, devices, systems, and processes that will help solve tomorrow's biggest challenges in health care, transportation, climate change, and more. Then, go on to work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical, communications, nanotechnology, and power-generation.

Experiment with real-world applications alongside faculty—in 50,000 square feet and 12 stories of state-of-the-art labs and computer centers including the Microfluidic and Interfacial Transport lab, Advanced Automotive Engine lab, Advanced Space Propulsion lab, and the Skeletal Tissue Mechanics and Mechanotransduction lab. Invent an ultrasonic device that deters whales, dolphins, and seals from swimming into fishing nets. Use four of the major design software platforms used in industry in our Computer Aided Engineering Laboratory. Design a rocket engine to withstand the subzero temperatures of outer space or biomedical devices such as the Jaipur foot or a prosthetic knee joint.

For more than 35 years, Michigan Tech's Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) has ranked in the top 30 nationally for degrees awarded. Earn your BSME at an institution that's nationally-known and respected and be rewarded with some of the highest initial career outcomes and starting salaries in the country. Want to take your education one step further? Earn a master's in one additional year through our Accelerated Master's program.

"I heard through relatives and friends that Michigan Tech was a good school, it had a good reputation in engineering, which was enough for me to apply. After a campus visit and seeing the surrounding area, I knew that it was the place to further my education."Gabriel Raney, Mechanical Engineering
