Deans, Chairs and Directors Informational Session
Human Resources in collaboration with the Vice President for Administration, Vice President for Research, Financial Services & Operations, and Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion areas are providing two half-day informational sessions for Deans, Chairs and Directors.
Human Resources in collaboration with the Vice President for Research and Financial Services & Operations, provided two half-day informational sessions for Department Coordinators, Administrative Aides and Office Assistants.
Human Resources and the office of Institutional Equity & Inclusion presents a series of trainings for supervisors. The three part Supervisor Training Series is provided annually and presents valuable information such as the functions of HR and IEI, Day to Day Supervision, and Maximizing Performance. It is expected that all supervisors at Michigan Tech complete the three part series. If you've previously completed one or more of these sessions, you will not need to retake the session. Please encourage any functional supervisors to attend these sessions.
Part One: Services and Functions of HR and Institutional Equity
An introductory session to learn about the core service areas and functions provided by Human Resources and the Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion.
Part Two: Day to Day Supervision
This session will help supervisors understand and prepare for everyday responsibilities and challenges. Topics will range from scheduling to safety and from harassment to professionalism.
Part Three: Maximizing Performance
This session will cover strategies for maximizing employee performance. Topics will include: Departmental Onboarding, Developing Competencies, Employee Coaching, Feedback and Recognition, and Open Communication.
Staff Search Committee Certification
This two part certification covers best practices and legal aspects of conducting a dynamic search and successfully hiring the best candidate.
Effective July 1 2014, completion of this certification is required for all employees who will serve as a search committee chair and is strongly encouraged for all staff who will serve on a search committee. Effective July 1 2015, completion of this certification is required for all staff who will serve on a search committee.
Part 1: Attend "Recruiting and Hiring" Training Session
This training covers each step of the staff hiring process, provides direction for effective interviewing, and delivers other resources to support recruitment and hiring. Human Resources and Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion staff present this session a couple times each year.

Part 2: Complete "Best Practices of Staff Hiring (Legal Aspects)" Online Course
This online course was designed by staff in the Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion. It consists of a 35 minute audio/PowerPoint presentation, hiring scenarios you read and respond to, and a brief survey.
This course is made available to staff who successful complete Part 1.
