Professor and Chair, Department of Computer Science

College of Computing

The Department of Computer Science at Michigan Technological University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Computer Science. We seek an enthusiastic and visionary leader to help us accelerate growth in the areas of: (1) undergraduate and graduate enrollments, (2) externally funded research, and (3) industry engagement. We are building a culturally diverse faculty committed to teaching and scholarship in a multicultural and inclusive environment, and we seek a department chair who shares these values.

The department is one of two departments in the new College of Computing, Michigan’s only academic college dedicated to computing. The College of Computing, founded in 2019, represents a deliberate institutional intent to better serve the computing and technology needs of Michigan and the nation. Under the leadership of the recently hired Dave House Dean of Computing, the expectation is for the Department and the College to continue growing as we seek to fill multiple faculty positions in addition to this chair position.

While the College is new, Computer Science has existed at Michigan Tech for nearly 50 years, graduating our first students in 1974. With our recent growth in enrollments, computer science is now the second largest major on campus. We have made significant gains in diversity and externally funded research, setting records in both last year. The department has 24 regular faculty members, 554 undergraduate students in two BS programs (Computer Science and Software Engineering) and 76 graduate students in four programs (MS in Computer Science, MS in Cybersecurity, MS in Data Science, and PhD in Computer Science.) Our BS in Software Engineering is routinely ranked in the top ten nationally. The department collaborates with the Department of Applied Computing on a BS in Cybersecurity and teaches a substantial portion of the courses required in other programs, particularly the BS in Computer Engineering and the BS in Mathematics and Computer Science.

Building on current nationally and internationally recognized research programs, we envision growing broadly to support the long-term computing interests of the university’s educational and research mission. Current areas of growth include artificial intelligence/machine learning, cybersecurity, and software engineering. The department is a key partner with multiple research centers at Michigan Tech, primarily the Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC), the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC), and Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI), all of which are growing rapidly. The department has ready access to campuswide high performance computing capabilities, as well as interdisciplinary research labs at the GLRC.

Michigan Tech is an internationally renowned doctoral research university with approximately 7000 students and 400 faculty located in Houghton, Michigan, in the scenic Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior.
