STEM Public Policy MS Program

Are you ready to pave the way for a more advanced, well-engineered future? Join the ever-developing field of public policy with a focus on putting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to work for the community you live in. Be one of the minds shaping the world with technical knowledge and expertise.

An Accelerated Master's Program is available for current Michigan Tech students.

Program Overview

As public policy becomes an increasingly impactful part of science and engineering careers, lead the way with a Master of Science degree in STEM Public Policy. Unlike a traditional Master's of Public Administration or Public Policy program, a STEM-based approach places heavier emphasis on the role of data analytics, engineering, and technology management in policy making.

This coursework-based degree encompasses core elements of public management, including policy analysis, leadership, ethics, and program evaluation—but with a strong technical foundation. Learn to effectively manage modern, tech-driven public sector challenges like smart city initiatives, digital governance, and cybersecurity threats.

Assistant Professor, Environmental Policy

The most pressing challenges to our democratic institutions weren't inevitable—they were designed. This means we have the power to redesign them for a more resilient future.

Advancing democracy and the human condition amidst rapid technological and environmental change requires more than just technical expertise; it requires a fundamental re-evaluation of our public policy frameworks. Our faculty in the STEM Public Policy program are dedicated to teaching students how to harness data-driven insights and social science methodologies to navigate the complexities of the 21st century.

In our research and online classrooms, we strive to make the invisible structures of governance visible. By questioning the systems that dictate how resources are allocated and how voices are heard, we empower our students to lead collective efforts at transformation. Our goal is to ensure that as the world changes, our policies don't just keep pace—they actively work to ensure that every community has the opportunity to flourish.

"Many forms of government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."Winston Churchill
