Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) will need to be reviewed and approved by the Research Integrity Office in order to continue using Highly Hazardous Materials.

Our office understands that there is no “one size fits all” SOP for each department, but there are elements that should be consistent throughout the use of these materials. Those elements are listed below:

  1. Title
  2. Scope/Purpose
  3. Definitions of key terms
  4. Training requirements
  5. Materials/Equipment
  6. Hazards
  7. Spill Response/Equipment malfunction response
  8. PPE
  9. Procedure(s) (step-by-step process) including setup, procedure, clean up
  10. References
  11. Revision History OR Current Revision Date

Please note that each procedure that uses Highly Hazardous Materials must include an SOP that covers each of the above elements.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping research safe on campus.
