Disclaimer: The requirements outlined in this category serve as general institutional guidance. Because chemical properties and reactivity vary, Principal Investigators and lab personnel must review the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for chemical-specific handling, containment, and protective equipment protocols that may supersede these general rules.
Examples
- Potassium (powder)
- Zirconium (fine powder)
- Lithium (powder)
- Sodium (powder)
Storage Requirements
Maintain between 15°C and 25°C (59°F–77°F) in a room with continuous mechanical ventilation (minimum 4–10 air changes per hour), relative humidity below 60%, and away from combustible materials.
Incompatible Chemicals
Water/moisture, strong acids, strong bases, and strong oxidizing agents.
PPE Required
- Chemical splash goggles
- Lab coat
- An additional engineering control must be a fume hood when operating with these chemicals.
- Nitrile gloves
