Guidelines for Hiring Postdoctoral Scholars

Background

Postdoctoral scholars (postdocs) are valuable members of our campus community and contribute greatly to the research activities at Michigan Tech. These positions are often dependent on external funding and often require highly specialized skills. As a result, it is important to maintain flexible hiring practices that allow for rapid hiring of postdocs but also allow for diverse applicants to be considered for these positions. All postdoctoral scholars and positions must meet the current guidelines.

Posting Process

When a postdoc position is available, there must be an open search using the current process in Human Resources. Human Resources will post the position and collect application materials for the supervisor to review using the established hiring processes.

If a postdoc supervisor has a candidate identified, a posting waiver may be submitted for consideration if one of the following conditions are met:

  1. The candidate for the position has completed a PhD at Michigan Tech within one calendar year of the start date, OR
  2. The candidate possesses scarce skills required for the position.

Please contact Renee Ozanich in Human Resources for a posting waiver or more information about the posting process.

Hiring Process for Open Searches

For open searches for post doc positions a full search committee for application review is not required. The supervisor for the postdoc may make the hiring decision alone, however it is highly recommended that a search include collaborators or others as appropriate.

Postdoctoral searches will follow the Staff Hiring Process steps beginning with the steps in Phase 2, which require requesting approval before scheduling interviews or extending offers to candidates.

Equal Opportunity Compliance and Title IX will review the reasons for non-selection before interviews and job offers to ensure the hiring is equitable to all of the candidates and Human Resources will ensure that the selected candidate meets the current postdoctoral scholar guidelines. Following approval, an offer of employment can be made to the candidate using the process established by Human Resources.
