Undergraduate Research Opportunity: AI-based Tutoring

The Breaking Digital Barriers Research Group is seeking four paid undergraduate student researchers, to work on a project related to developing AI-based tutoring systems to help older adults keep up with digital technology. We encourage students from Computer Science, Applied Computing, Cognitive & Learning Sciences, Humanities, and other departments to support our team.

Each student will work in one of the following four focus areas:

  • Data scrubbing: Scrubbing and analyzing questions from online forums that offer computer support; building a data set of real questions for use in training LLM.
  • Human-AI interaction: conduct literature reviews, conduct preliminary studies to examine the implications of different styles of response on human trust in AI-facilitated help sessions.
  • Learning from tutors: learn the BASIC tutoring model, code session notes, literature review, conduct interviews/studies
  • Asking effective questions: literature review, analyzing/coding questions that learners ask about technology.

Security and Privacy Lab Assistants

The MTU Security and Privacy Lab is looking for undergraduate students who are interested in working on security and privacy problems in the Spring 2024 semester. Undergraduate students who worked in the SnP lab received recognitions including Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), departmental scholar, etc. The qualifications are as follows:

1) The candidate should be eager to tackle technical challenges in cybersecurity.
2) The candidate should have good programming skills.
3) Candidates who have embedded systems programming/operating system programming experience would be a plus.

Software Developer Position

Associate Professor Scott Kuhl, Computer Science, is seeking graduate and undergraduate job applicants for a software developer position. The software developer will help develop, improve, and deploy educational tools to introduce students to mechatronics. The project entails updating and improving an existing 3D industrial robot simulator written in Java, and a PLC educational website written in PHP.

The software developer will also leverage Canvas to develop from scratch other educational tools for online use. Knowledge of mechatronics, PLCs, and industrial robots is not required for the position, as others working on the project can provide assistance in developing those educational materials. Experience with web technologies is strongly preferred.

Part of an NSF ExLENT grant, this hourly project starts in Fall 2023; it is expected that the position will continue through the Spring and Summer 2024 semesters. Please apply here. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Assistive Technology Research Opportunity

Department of Computer Science faculty member Keith Vertanen is seeking new team members to take part in a collaborative project with MIT that develops Nomon. Nomon is an open-source interface designed to help severely motor-impaired individuals communicate or control their computers.
