Message from the Chair

Welcome from Dr. Linda Ott, Chair

We have a long history in computer science here at Michigan Tech. In just a few years we will be celebrating 50 years of computer science degrees being awarded by Michigan Tech. Our first graduates received their BS degrees in Computer Science back in 1974. We have grown substantially since those early days, now offering BS, MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science, as well as a BS in Software Engineering, an MS in Cybersecurity, and an MS in Data Science  We also jointly offer a BS in Cybersecurity and a Math and Computer Science BS degree program. We support university-wide graduate degree programs in Computational Science and Engineering and provide a significant portion of the courses required of computer engineering undergraduate majors.

Our research programs also span a wide spectrum. Whether you are interested in positively impacting the environment by designing more efficient processors or developing technologies to enhance the capabilities of computing users with disabilities, we have research opportunities of interest to you. Other research programs in our Department involve cloud computing, cybersecurity, virtual environments, software engineering, algorithms and data structures, computer science education, artificial intelligence, data mining, data science, and citizen science applied to a wide range of application areas.  Funding for our research activities is through the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research and other governmental agencies, as well as industry.

We have a broad range of opportunities for our students to enhance their resumes through student organizations, co-ops and internships, outreach, and research. Our graduates are in high demand. Our BS and MS alumni are employed in all aspects of the economy, from the tech industry to the entertainment industry, to logistics and manufacturing, to the automotive and aerospace industries, to financial industries and government agencies.  Our PhD alumni  have found rewarding careers in both academia  and industry.

I hope that as you look further into our programs you will find that we have what you are looking for.  I am truly proud to be a member of this Department.  It’s a great time to be in a computing discipline and it’s exciting to be a part of Michigan Tech.
