CSA Departments

11 departments, 33 majors, 23 concentrations, 50 minors, and eight certificates: the College of Sciences and Arts has carefully developed programs to suit many interests and skill sets. Undergraduate and graduate programs are small enough for faculty and students to interact easily; in fact, opportunities for students to join faculty in research are numerous and encouraged—yet the College is large enough to cover many exciting areas in each dynamic field. Our faculty and staff are eager to work with students as they explore their passions and create the future.

Researchers taking samples in a riverbed

Biological Sciences brings together students and faculty in search of solutions to biological problems—from medicine to freshwater ecosystem health. Use molecular tools to grow, modify, and characterize plants, animals, and microorganisms in the lab. Present results in classrooms, research symposia, and scientific journals. Michigan Tech students work and play in all seasons of our outdoor playground, the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Chemistry

Barometer beakers filled with colorful liquid in a row.

Chemistry learned through lab experiences and personal interaction, a strong curriculum, and vigilant faculty guidance creates chemists of the future - you could be one. We're proud of the work we do with students seeking undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Mathematical Sciences degree students undergo a rigorous curriculum in a vibrant environment for professional development and scientific discourse. Our faculty, along with students, model combustion in diesel engines, use advanced statistics to find the genetic basis of complex diseases, and develop communication theories needed for future quantum computers.

Physics

Inside the Cloud Chamber Facility with researchers around.

Where do the highest-energy cosmic rays come from? Can nanotubes of boron nitride be used to make new electronic devices? Why do some clouds rain while others do not? Michigan Technological University Physics students and faculty take on these questions and challenges. Work together in a close-knit, vibrant community to find answers to these and many other fundamental questions.

Psychology and Human Factors

Student sitting and observing robots as they move.

Psychology and Human Factors advances minds for the future and the future for our minds through innovative and interdisciplinary research and professional development.

Social Sciences

Use tools from anthropology, geography, history, political science, and sociology to help find sustainable solutions to complex problems. Social Sciences at Michigan Technological University helps students apply academic concepts to real-world issues.

Visual and Performing Arts

Visual and Performing Arts students and faculty work together to create engaging and thoughtful works of art. Degree programs prepare students for professions that need both artistic and technical knowledge and skill. Whether a student majors in theatre or sound, completes one of the many minors in art or music, or simply participates in the department as a musician, actor, artist, or technician, there is something here for everyone. Art is Smart.
