Human Subjects Research (HSR) Training Requirements

The protection of human subjects participating in research projects is essential to the ethical conduct of University activities. It is imperative that these projects be designed and conducted in a manner that:

  1. protects the integrity of the human subject, and
  2. is in accordance with applicable federal regulations and University policy.

CITI Program Training Courses for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research

Michigan Tech utilizes CITI Program to provide online training to ensure the protection of human subjects in research. All investigators engaged in an HSR project must complete HSR training.

Investigators include anyone assisting in a research project who will be interacting or intervening with participants or their private identifiable data/specimens being collected for research purposes. This includes Michigan Tech faculty, staff, undergrad or graduate students, and any external investigators/collaborators who do not have a Michigan Tech status.

Required Modules

All investigators working on an HSR project must complete a CITI Program training course related to the type of research being conducted.

For a complete understanding of HSR, all investigators (faculty/staff/students) participating in research involving the use of human subjects must choose and complete one of the following CITI courses:

  • Social/Behavioral Research Course (12 modules)
  • Biomedical Research Course (15 modules)

Any researcher working in a clinical trial research study is required to also take the following:

  • GCP Social and Behavioral Research Best Practices for Clinical Research (9 modules)

To register or log in, visit CITI Login and Registration. Please refer to these instructions for more information and guidance.

If needed, you may complete the training course in several sessions. Returning to the site requires signing in with your username and password.

Refresher Course Modules

CITI Program courses expire three years after initial completion. Michigan Tech requires all investigators engaging in HSR to remain current in their HSR training. Refresher courses must be completed every three years to stay compliant with this policy.
