MTU RedTeam at GrrCON

The MTU RedTeam captured 1st place in an Open Source INTelligence Capture The Flag contest (OSINT CTF), hosted at the GrrCON Cyber Security Summit and Hacker Conference, September 16-17, in Grand Rapids, MI. Thirteen RedTeam members and two RedTeam alumni attended the conference.

Competing in the CTF were Matthew Chau, Ben Gerhart, Devon Midkiff, Jacob Ludwig, Trevor Hornsby, and Leeanna Burns, who is not a MTU student. Their opponents included students from Big Ten universities and teams of industry professionals.

"GrrCON was a fantastic success and we are all very grateful for the department's support," says Trevor Hornsby, RedTeam vice president. "After talking to several students attending for the first time, they all expressed appreciation for the knowledge and networking opportunities gained by attending."

Copper Country Coders

Global demand for 21st century workers with quality computer science skills is at an all time high. Yet, providing CS education to students around the world presents many challenges.

To help address this, Dr. Leo Ureel (CS) received a $4,914 U.S. State Dept. grant titled, “Copper Country Coders Virtual Courses" for U.S. Embassy in Bahrain.” The award supports virtual presentation of two courses to 40 Bahraini youth in grades 6-12, through the U.S. Embassy Manama, Bahrain.

The courses, Beginning Web Development and Programming Games in Python, take place October 2-30.  Undergraduates in the CCCoders student organization are developing and will conduct the classes, with emphasis on learning creative, hands-on problem solving skills in an online environment.
