RSO Councils

As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance collaboration, engagement, and support for student organizations, we are excited to introduce a new council structure for registered student organizations at Michigan Technological University. This new structure aims to provide clearer guidance and support across different categories, ensuring that each group has the resources and connections needed to thrive. The council structure will group student organizations into the following categories:

Each council has a designated staff member to support and guide the member organizations within that area. The council will serve as a valuable resource for sharing best practices, providing mentorship, and facilitating cross-group collaboration. They will also be beneficial in assisting with planning events, resolving challenges, and ensuring that all student organizations can operate efficiently and effectively. These councils may change with time as we better understand whose needs and interests overlap.

What does this structure provide for your organization?

Connections with others in similar organizations.
Access to specialized resources and advice from staff dedicated to your group’s category.
Opportunities to engage in cross-organization events and initiatives.
Regularly scheduled meetings for presidents (or an alternate representative) of organizations within your category.
Streamlined communication and support from the Student Leadership and Involvement staff.

What responsibilities does the assigned staff person have?

Serve as the primary contact and resource for assigned groups.
Host group meetings regularly as determined by the group.
Process new RSO requests within the category to build relationships early.
Regularly review RSO documentation and advise organizations of needed updates and revisions.
Consult with and guide RSOs on topics such as organizational management, recruitment, fundraising, financial management, event planning, leadership development, and university policy.

Is my organization required to attend?

At this time, there are no formal repercussions for not attending council meetings. Organizations are strongly encouraged to attend, as these meetings serve as a key source of important information, provide clarification on questions, and foster opportunities for collaboration.

How frequently do the councils meet?

Each council will determine the frequency of its meetings. All scheduled council meetings will be included on the RSO Important Dates calendar.

Who should attend? Can more than one organization officer attend?

Presidents are expected to attend council meetings. If the president is unable to attend, the organization should send a representative in their place. To keep meetings efficient, especially in councils with many organizations, attendance should be limited to one representative per organization.
