Dr. Martin J. Caserio (BS MTU MY 1936, Hon PhD MTU 1961). Dr. Caserio began his career as a metallurgical chemist for Carnegie Illinois Steel in 1936 and joined GM as a metals researcher for AC Spark Plug in 1937. He served in increasing roles of responsibility at GM in the Delco Electronics Division, AC Spark Plugs, the GMC Truck and Coach Division, and the Pontiac Motor Division. By 1981 he was the General Motors Group vice president and assistant to GM’s president. He spent 44 years with General Motors.

Dr. Caserio was twice named Michigan Tech's Distinguished Alumni Awardee (1977 and 1998), as well as receiving the university's Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1970. He was one of the original incorporators of the Fund—he started in 1957 with the Michigan Tech Foundation and continued to serve on the Michigan Tech Fund Board until 1975. He was president from 1963-68. He served on the Michigan Tech Board of Control for many years, including as its chairman. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering from Michigan Tech in 1961. He was a Michigan All-Star singles bowling champion in 1941 and won the Flint singles championship the following year.

A graduate of Calumet High School, Martin established the Martin J. Caserio Scholarship to benefit high achieving students from the Copper Country. He was inducted into the Academy of Metallurgical and Materials Engineers in 1998.
