Dr. F. John McMulkin (BS MetE MCMT 1937, Hon PhD MTU 1972) was Vice President of Research for Dofasco, now ArcelorMittal Dofasco, for over 40 years. Founded in 1912, ArcelorMittal Dofasco is Canada’s leading steel producer and a hallmark of advanced manufacturing in North America. Many referred to John as the father of Oxygen Steel Making in North America, having convinced the managers of Dofasco to invest in the process that was to revolutionize the steel industry. Prior to Dofasco, he began his career as a Metallurgist for the Algoma Steel Corporation, and later served as a research fellow for the Ontario Research Foundation.

John received many awards during his career. These have included the 1968 American Society of Metals William Hunt Eisenman Award, the AIME Charter Distinguished Member of the Iron and Steel Society in 1976, became a fellow of the American Society of Metals, and in 2003 received a special recognition at the Oxygen Steel Making Symposium for his pioneering contributions. In 1971, John delivered the commencement address at Michigan Tech, and received an honorary Doctorate of Engineering degree from the University.

In 1996, John was elected as a charter member of the Academy of Metallurgical and Materials Engineers at Michigan Tech where he was one of nine in this first class and the only Canadian. John passed away in 2008.
