The Clinical Practicum
Take the knowledge you've learned on campus and experience how it all comes together during your clinical practicum - a 5-12 month clinical internship - at an affiliated hospital laboratory. Here, you'll work alongside certified laboratory professionals to learn how hospital laboratories operate while performing tests on patient samples, operating laboratory instrumentation, and analyzing quality control.
After the completion of your degree program and clinical practicum, you are eligible to take a national certification exam and become a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist.
Choose Your Route
In the Medical Laboratory Science program at Michigan Tech, students have a choice between two clinical practicum routes - the University-based route and the Hospital-based route. Each route provides an excellent clinical experience for students. Students in the MLS program take a practicum preparation course and work closely with the Program Coordinator to determine which route best fits their needs. Some basic differences between the two are outlined below.
Michigan Tech holds the NAACLS accreditation.
Available to 4+1 degree program students exclusively, the University-based route allows students to complete their clinical practicum at a non-NAACLS accredited hospital where they gain hands-on experience in a real clinical laboratory. This route offers students the option to complete a 24-week practicum in a wide variety of locations throughout the Midwest, including right here in Upper Michigan. During the practicum, students will also enroll in an intensive online course to aid in the review and preparation for a national certification exam.
Hospital MLS programs hold the NAACLS accreditation.
Available to 3+1 and 4+1 degree program students, the Hospital-based route sends students to hospital MLS programs in lower Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, or Minnesota. The duration of this route may vary between 6 months to 1 year. Students in the Hospital-based route will go through the hospital's program curriculum, review, and requirements throughout their clinical internship.
