An Afternoon on the Town is an opportunity for local businesses/services to welcome students and show them what they have to offer. All area businesses/services are invited to participate and all students are welcome to attend.
Join us for An Afternoon on the Town 2026 on Saturday, August 29th from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM!
This event is hosted by: Student Leadership and Involvement, the Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success, and Residence Education and Housing Services.
Information for Organizations
Registration for An Afternoon on the Town 2026 is now open! Registration closes on Tuesday, August 18th at 11:59 PM.
New for 2026
Organizations that have participated in the past, will notice some changes to this year’s event:
- The route has expanded to include Hancock! There will be tables throughout Quincy Street and shuttles to transport students between Houghton and Hancock.
- In response to student feedback about not being able to complete the full route, this year's event now runs until 3:00 PM instead of 2:00 PM.
- In previous years, we hosted a student raffle. We will not be hosting a raffle this year; however, organizations are welcome to host their own raffle or giveaway at their table. If needed, Student Leadership & Involvement can assist with prize distribution through our office.
- With the expansion to Hancock, there will be a shuttle available to bus students between campus and Shelden Ave., so no organizations will be placed on College Ave. Many students will still walk through College Ave., so organizations located there have the option to host at their location or be placed along Shelden Ave.
Additional Event Information
As your organization prepares for An Afternoon on the Town, please keep in mind:
- Organizations located on the main route (walking through downtown Houghton on Shelden Avenue and downtown Hancock on Quincy Street) will be expected to host from their location. Organizations not located on the route will be assigned a space on campus or along Shelden Ave., or if they're located in Hancock, assigned a space along Quincy Street and provided with a table.
- There is no registration fee.
- This is your opportunity to connect with the students of Michigan Tech and allow them to get to know the services that are near their new home in the Keweenaw!
- We recommend promoting services, specials, and what makes your organization unique.
- You are asked to refrain from selling any type of food or merchandise at your table. If you would like to provide food samples please refer to this website for permits, rules and regulations set forth by the Health Department: https://www.wupdhd.org/resources-for-food-establishments/
- Please remember to respect noise ordinances.
- Each organization is responsible for cleaning up their space after the event.
- This event is intended for community businesses, non-profits, and other public entities. While we cannot prevent student groups from tabling along the route if they own or rent adjacent property, we cannot accommodate student groups that request to participate due to demand. Please register for K-Day in order to market your student organization.
Information for Students
Starting on campus, throughout the downtown Houghton area on Shelden Avenue, and into downtown Hancock on Quincy Street there will be music, refreshments, and giveaways for student participants. There will be shuttles available between campus and downtown Houghton and between downtown Houghton and Hancock.
