Isle Royale: Works by Artists-in-Residence

A world of artistic expression inspired by the wilderness of Isle Royale. The artworks showcased in this exhibition have all been produced by artist in residence on the beautiful island in Lake Superior.

Artists: Douglas Degges
Location: Rozsa Art Galleries, A-Space
Season: 2024/25 - Fall 2024
Since the fall of 2019, Degges has been creating a series of intriguing abstract paintings based on cell phone photos from his family in Louisiana in a group text. This project explores shared visual experiences and affirms the concept of home as immaterial and held within oneself. Alongside these paintings are a series of abstract sculptures that Degges collaborated on with his wonderful canine companion, Cricket.

Simple Machines: Poetry, Letterpress, and the Art of the Little Magazine

Season: 2023/24 - Spring 2024
Simple Machines is a traveling letterpress poetry magazine propelled by the generous support of Michigan Technological University, founded and edited by M. Bartley Seigel, and features original poetry from a diverse array of national and international poets. The Rozsa Galleries proudly shared the art and words of Simple Machines in a multi-media setting featuring audio clips of the poets reading their own work, a live printing demonstration, and a live performance from visiting Ukrainian poet and Simple Machines contributor Yuliya Musakovska.

Layered in Between: Prints by Erin Hoffman

Artists: Erin Hoffman

Season: 2023/24 - Fall 2023
Erin Hoffman is an artist and printmaker from Muskegon, Michigan, who deals primarily with political and social concerns. Through the presentation of mismatched ideas and assemblages, her art serves as a prompt for critical thought and new conclusions.

Visual and Performing Arts faculty and staff art show featuring works by Jared Anderson (installation), Anne Beffel (contemplative photography), Mary Cyr (fiber arts), Terri Jo Frew (fiber arts), Lisa Gordillo (sculpture), Kenyon Hansen (ceramics), Lindsey Heiden (sculpture), Susie Kilpela (sculpture), Mike Maxwell (audio installation), Libby Meyer (music), Christopher Plummer (photography and sculpture), and Beth Techtmann (multimedia).

Arabesque

Artists: Clement Yeh and Tomas Co

Focused on dance and movement, “Arabesque” brings the works of Canadian artist Clement Yeh and local artist and Michigan Tech Professor Emeritus Tomas Co.

what makes a wall

Artist: jd slack
Location: Rozsa Concourse
Season: 2018/19
jd slack is a pastel artist and professor of communication and cultural studies. Her paintings integrate brilliant color, provocative imagery, and thoughtful engagement with physical and imaginative worlds. She lives and works in the Traprock Valley on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan, but travels the world to gather images and inspiration.

Ancient Coast Series

Artist: Michael Letts
Location: Rozsa Concourse
Season: 2018/19
Michael Letts lives and works in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan as a practicing artist and Professor of Art Education at Northern Michigan University. He holds an MFA in Painting from The Ohio State University. His paintings have been shown in numerous regional, national, and international exhibitions.


2017/18

Always room for rain

Artists: Raquel Alvizures and Ross Chaney
Location: Rozsa Art Galleries, A-Space
Season: 2017/18 - Spring 2018
This exhibit featured paintings by artists Raquel Alvizures (Guatemala) and Ross Chaney (Cherokee and Osage Nations / New Mexico). Both artists combine colors and textures to develop paintings that express their ties to their cultures and to the stories that shaped them.

It's nothing personal (space)

Artist: Katie Hargrave
Location: Rozsa Art Galleries, A-Space
Season: 2016/17 - Fall 2017
Katie Hargrave explores our symbols of landscape, land use, and competing land interests in this exhibit. “It’s nothing personal (space)” touches on our private, personal, and public feelings about land. The exhibition includes fiber, audio, video, and drawings, and was inspired by a road trip to visit the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, which was the site of militia protests during the winter of 2016.

ChickenBus

Artists: Lisa Gordillo

“ChickenBus” is the first U.S. exhibit of works inspired by Gordillo’s long-term collaboration with Guatemalan artists and writers.

Amusement Park Avenue

Season: 2016/17 - Spring 2017
Visual and Performing Arts Faculty and Staff exhibition of a variety of works of many different media and concepts, touching upon all five senses and inspiring curiosity, as if walking down an amusement park avenue. Fifteen artists were represented:  Jared Anderson, Anne Beffel, Mary Cyr, Kent Cyr, M.C. Friedrich, Terri Frew, Lisa Gordillo, Roger Held, Bethany Jones, Susie Kilpela, Jeremy Littlefield, Josh Loar, Elizabeth Meyer, Christopher Plummer, and Jess Portfleet.

Being Between

Artists: Lali Khalid
Location: Rozsa Art Galleires, A-Space
Season: 2016/17 - Fall 2016
Lali Khalid’s photographs of identity, displacement and home. Khalid, a Pakistani-American artist, holds degrees from The National College of Fine Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, and The Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. “Being Between” is the first exhibit of the Rozsa Art Galleries “Independent Artist Series.”

Print and installation artist R. Kauff examines art and ecology in this exhibit of hand-carved tools and drawings.
