Vehicle Registration and Parking Assignments
Employees who will be parking a vehicle on campus are required to registered each vehicle with Transportation Services. Faculty/Staff Parking Permits are required to park in any of the employee parking Lots and can be purchased at the Transportation Services Office. Permits are only valid for the vehicles registered to the permit.
- New Employee Orientation
- On the first Monday of each payperiod, Transportation Services personnel attend the
new employee orientation session at the Lakeshore Center. At that time, personnel will provide information on the following:
- Parking Permits and Regulations
- Courtesy Patrol Program
- Shuttle Services
- Husky Motors (Motor Pool)
- When attending New Employee Orientation, please remember to bring in a copy of your vehicle registration as Transportation Services will be available to issue you your new parking permit.
- Human Resources will provide you via email with a temporary City of Houghton parking permit to park outside of the Lakeshore Center and attend New Employee Orientation.
- Employees of Mont Ripley, Portage Lake Golf Course, Keweenaw Research Center, and Ford Forestry Center are not required to obtain a permit unless they plan on parking on campus regularly.
- On the first Monday of each payperiod, Transportation Services personnel attend the
new employee orientation session at the Lakeshore Center. At that time, personnel will provide information on the following:
- Parking Permit Purchased via Automatic Payroll Deduction
- Permanent full-time and part-time employees are eligible to have their parking fees automatically deducted from payroll. Contract, temporary, and adjunct employees are not eligible for automatic payroll deduction.
- Not attending New Employee Orientation?
- Employees who are not attending a new employee orientation session or weren't able to get a permit at orientation may come to the Transportation Services office during regular business hours to obtain a proper permit.
Vehicles may be registered on the Michigan Tech Parking Portal or by bringing your vehicle registration to our office in the Administration Building, Room 100.
Required vehicle registration information:
- VIN
- License Plate Number/State
- Vehicle Make/Model/Style
- Year
- Color
Any vehicle(s) that you register on campus will make you the responsible party for all notices, parking fees, citations, or towing expenses that the vehicle may incur while it is registered in your name.
PLEASE NOTE: Per the State of Michigan Secretary of State - License plate digits with a "0" in it will always use the number zero (not the letter "O"). Although other states may accept and use the letter "O", we abide by State of Michigan law.
Employee Parking Options
All employees must purchase a permit in order to park in Campus Parking Lots. Permits are only valid for the vehicles registered to the permit. Permits can be purchased at the Transportation Service Office.
Parking is first-come, first-served for the Lots associated with each permit.

If you leave the University you must return your permit to the Transportation Services Office for a pro-rated refund (if paid in full) or to stop deductions* (if you elected for payroll deduction). If you are not going to be on campus for a period of time, you may return your permit to the Transportation Services Office for a pro-rated refund (if paid in full) or to stop deductions* (if you elected for payroll deduction).
*If you are not on payroll for any period of time and have not returned your permit and completed a Stop Deductions Form, deductions will be charged in arrears when you return to campus.
Transportation Services offers a reduced rate parking permit which grants you access to General Parking Lot 24. General Permits are non-refundable.

Lot 24 near the Student Development Complex (SDC) can be accessed from Sharon Ave.
The Husky Campus Shuttle has a bus stop located near Lot 24 at the SDC and runs Monday-Saturday (Tuesday-Saturday during breaks). Please visit our shuttle page for more information on shuttle routes and schedules.
Faculty members who have been granted Emeritus status from the Board of Trustees are offered a complimentary parking permit. Similar to Faculty/Staff permits, Emeritus are required to have their vehicles properly registered with Transportation Services and linked to their permit. Emeritus permits are issued in perpetuity.

Emeritus, J1 Scholars, Retired Employees, or Volunteers are not eligible for automatic payroll deductions, but permits can be purchased in pro-rated durations if needed. Contact the Transportation Services office for more information on parking options.
Occasionally university employees may live in the Daniell Heights Apartments. RED and BLACK faculty/staff parking permits are valid to park throughout Daniell Heights.
Any family members, partners, or visitors would be required to purchase the appropriate
permit or choose to park and pay in the Daniell Heights visitor areas. Please contact
Transportation Services at parking@mtu.edu for parking options.
Professional Housing Staff who live on campus in one of the Residential hall apartments will be assigned a reserved parking space outside of their building. A valid RED faculty/staff permit is required. Family members, partners, or visitors would be required to purchase the appropriate permit. Availability for family members or partners reserved parking is limited. Please contact Transportation Services at parking@mtu.edu for parking options.
Designated accessible parking spaces are available to drivers who possess a valid state-issued disability parking placard or license plate. In the State of Michigan an accessibility placard or license plate is issued by the Secretary of State after submitting a Disability Parking Placard Application. All Handicap Placards and/or License Plates are required to be registered with Transportation Services. Please bring your Drivers License and your Placard or License Plate Registration Card to the Transportation Service Office to have it registered with your account.
- Per State of Michigan Law - "Privately owned parking lots and garages are not required to provide free parking."
- A valid Michigan Tech Parking Permit and a valid state-issued handicap placard or
license plate is required to park in the handicap spaces within the parking lots on
campus. You may park in any handicap space on campus with a valid MTU permit and valid placard/license plate.
- Parking in a handicap space within the parking lots on campus without a MTU permit is authorized with a state-issued "Free Parking" sticker attached to your valid placard or license plate.
- A Michigan Tech Parking Permit is not required to park in the handicap spaces within the visitor areas on campus, although a valid state-issued handicap placard or license plate is still required. Handicap spaces in the visitor areas are first come-first serve. Visitor Handicap Parking is located in the following areas:
- A valid Michigan Tech Parking Permit and a valid state-issued handicap placard or
license plate is required to park in the handicap spaces within the parking lots on
campus. You may park in any handicap space on campus with a valid MTU permit and valid placard/license plate.
Although visitor areas require payment on ParkMobile, Handicap parking is complimentary and you are not required to purchase a parking session.
Employee Parking Accommodations
Contact Equal Opportunity Compliance and Title IX (906-487-3310) for any accommodation requests. The Request An Accommodationform is required to be completed.
Faculty and staff may charge their electric vehicles (EVs) at no cost as a courtesy, provided the vehicle displays a valid Michigan Tech permit. EV parking is located in Lot 5 between the Rozsa Center and East Hall, with four charging stations available, including one accessible space.
We understand that at times, Faculty and Staff may have to leave their vehicle on campus overnight and possibly for a long duration while traveling out of town for university related business. Please contact Transportation Services at parking@mtu.edu to report that your vehicle will be parked on campus for a longer period of time.
Approved overnight and long-term parking locations are:
- Lot 24 at the SDC in the northwest corner of the lot near the sign that says "Traveling Athletes Parking"
- Lot 30 near the Husky Motors vehicles if you are leaving campus with a Husky Motors vehicle
A valid permit is required for overnight and long-term accommodations.
ALL vehicles of this type must be registered with Transportation Services. Permits are only available to purchase at the Transportation Services Office.
- Designated Parking Locations for motorcycles and mopeds are available throughout campus.

All trailers must be registered with Transportation Service prior to parking on campus. Permits are available to purchase at the Transportation Services Office. Trailer parking is available in the Daniell Heights overflow (V6) as designated by signs.
- Permits for the fall and spring semester are valid August 15 - April 30
- Permits for the summer semester are valid May 1 - August 14
Contact information needs to be kept current for communication if the trailer needs to move during winter or summer months for lot maintenance.
ALL vehicles of this type must be registered with Transportation Services. Permits are valid August 15 - April 30
- The University's snowmobile parking is located on the north side of Phoenix drive near the Facilities Storage Building.
Review the Michigan Secretary of State's Snowmobile Regulations.
- Michigan Tech prohibits operating snowmobiles on University property, except along Phoenix Drive.
Bicycles park free. Register your bicycle by submitting the online form—just provide make, model, color, and serial number. You will receive a registration decal in the mail. Please contact Public Safety and Police Services at 906-487-2216 if you have any questions.

Parking Regulations
Registration
Employee's vehicles must be registered within 48 hours upon arrival on campus. Employees may register as many vehicles owned by them or by a member of their immediate family as long as the vehicle you have on campus for the day is displaying your permit.
Campus Area
These regulations apply to all University property, including the main Houghton campus, Daniell Heights Apartments, Lakeshore Center, Portage Lake Golf Course, Mont Ripley, the Ford Forestry Center, the Michigan Tech Alumni Center, the Mineral Museum, the Keweenaw Research Center, the Alternative Energy Research Building (AERB) and the Tech Trails.
Insurance
The University does not accept responsibility for loss of, or damage to, any vehicle or the content thereof. It is recommended that owners carry personal insurance to cover such losses.
Abandoned Vehicles
No vehicle is to be abandoned on campus. A fine, plus towing costs, will be imposed on the owner of record if abandonment occurs. Vehicles without proper plates or parked for 48 hours or more in prohibited areas will be considered abandoned.
Prohibited Vehicles
Hot rods, drag-strip racers, modified stock cars, or other unconventional vehicles (except bicycles, motor-driven cycles, or motorcycles) are not allowed on campus. Vehicles must be licensed and street legal to be on campus property.
Vehicle Maintenance
All vehicles must be in good operating condition. No major repairs will be permitted on roads or in any parking areas on campus. Disabled vehicles must be towed from campus.
Selling of Vehicles
Parking a vehicle on campus in a manner that suggests it is being offered for sale is prohibited. Vehicles displaying advertising materials, posters, or “for sale” signs while parked on campus are not allowed.
Speed Limit
The speed limit is 25 miles per hour on campus roads, unless otherwise posted (e.g. 15 mph throughout Daniell Heights).
Permit Placement
- Sticker Permits must be displayed on the inside of the windshield in the lower left (driver side) corner at all times while parked on campus. Hanging Permits must be displayed from the rear view mirror displayed towards the front of the vehicle.
- Worn or no-longer adhesive permits can be replaced at no cost. Before requesting a replacement, please try cleaning the permit with warm, soapy water to see if it restores its tackiness. Your old permit must be returned before being issued a replacement.
- It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that the permit is visible at all times. On motorcycles/snowmobiles/trailers, the decal must be displayed in plain view in the location stated when the permit was purchased to be considered registered.
Lost or Stolen Permits
- Students/faculty/staff who lose a permit are required to purchase an additional permit at the rate of $50 or prorated price (whichever is less) or risk being ticketed.
- A police report from a law enforcement agency where you believe the permit was stolen from is required when reporting a stolen permit. There is no charge for the replacement of a stolen permit with a submitted police report.
Effective November 1–April 30 between the hours of 2 a.m. & 7 a.m.
Parking is prohibited on all campus streets and roadways and within all parking lots with the exception of Residential parking lots.
Overnight Parking Accommodations during the parking ban
As an employee, if you need accommodations to park on campus for overnight, please
contact Public Safety and Police Services at 906-487-2216 to request additional time
on campus. If granted, you will be assigned an area to park within an approved location.
If you don't have a valid permit you will be required to pay a meter with quarters
or on the mobile phone app ParkMobile beginning at 2 a.m. and for the duration of
your stay, or have a daily permit to avoid any citations.
