Fleet Maintenance

HM Fleet   HM Fleets

Husky Motors manages a fleet of approximately 40 rental vehicles, including SUVs, minivans, large passenger vans, and pickup trucks. While much of the fleet consists of late-model vehicles still under warranty, most maintenance and servicing are performed in-house.

Our skilled Husky Motors technicians prepare each vehicle prior to every rental in our state-of-the-art detailing and wash bay, which was upgraded in 2025 with a top-of-the-line vehicle washing system. Vehicle preparation includes:

  • Exterior wash and wax
  • Interior vacuuming, detailing, and cleaning
  • Window cleaning
  • Under-the-hood inspection, including checking and topping off all oils and fluids
  • Tire pressure check and adjustment as needed
  • Final visual inspection to ensure the overall condition of the vehicle is satisfactory

When a vehicle is returned after a rental, our Husky Motors technicians inspect it and complete any minor repairs as needed. If the vehicle requires major repairs beyond the scope of our technicians, we coordinate service with local, reputable, and licensed repair facilities.

All Husky Motors vehicles undergo a comprehensive multi-point preventive maintenance and safety inspection twice a year. This allows our staff to assess vehicle safety and identify potential issues early, helping to prevent breakdowns and avoid more costly repairs in the future.

Vehicle Breakdowns

Husky Motors continuously evaluates the condition of its vehicle fleet, with assessments based on safety, reliability, and resale value. When a vehicle is determined to be ready for replacement, it may be traded in toward the purchase of a new vehicle, offered for sale to other campus departments, or sold at auction.

  • Department Purchase
    • When a vehicle is identified for replacement, Husky Motors staff will email all University department heads with the vehicle details. If you or your department are interested in acquiring a Husky Motors vehicle, please respond to that email or contact us here.
  • Surplus Auction
    • If the vehicle is not selected for trade-in and no campus departments express interest, it will be sold as surplus equipment through an auction. Michigan Tech utilizes the Public Surplus auction platform for these sales.
