Parking and Permits
1
Yes! Michigan Tech allows Freshman living in the dorms to purchase a Residential permit for their vehicle. Permit pricing information can be found on the Permits page.
2
The funds collected for parking fees help to maintain the services we provide to the campus community, as well as infrastructure improvements to parking lots and metered locations. These funds are used for general parking lot maintenance such as line painting, street sweeping, snow removal, and even pot hole repair.
3
Yes! Michigan Tech does not regulate who can park in the handicap spaces. These spaces require a valid state issued handicap placard or license plate. If you need a temporary medical accommodation, you will need to set up an appointment to talk to the Michigan Tech Student Disability Services to discuss options that may be available to you.

Yes. Parking is enforced year-round regardless of the academic calendar and regardless of how many vehicles are parked in a parking lot. The only time parking isn't enforced are university holidays in which the University is closed - Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
5
Yes, with an exception. Outside of move-in day, Transportation Services offers those wishing to park closer to a building a 30-minute Loading/Unloading permit that is free of charge. You can request a 30-minute Loading/Unloading permit at the Transportation Services office or all Residential Hall reception desks. If after normal business hours, you can also request a Loading/Unloading permit from Public Safety and Police Services.
6
Visitor Parking Lots are enforced Monday - Friday 7AM till 4PM unless otherwise stated. Visitors do not have to register their vehicle if parking at any of the physical parking meters and by paying with quarters, or by parking in the digital meter zones with the web application ParkMobile.
Visitors who are staying overnight or for an extended stay must either register their vehicle and purchase the appropriate permit at Transportation Services or they can register their vehicle and purchase the appropriate permit at the MTU Parking Portal
Michigan Tech does offer two lots that provide free 2-hour parking. Lot 22 at the Student Development Center (SDC) and lot 95 at the Mineral Museum offers free parking for up to two hours.
7
Yes. You must purchase a permit for the entire year. If you will be leaving the University after the first semester, you can return your permit prior to January 1 to receive partial credit for your permit.
8
No. You must park in the Residential lot that your permit is authorized. Residential lots are enforced 24/7 for proper permit. We only sell as many Residential permits as there are spaces, so by parking in a parking lot that you don't have a permit for, you're taking a parking space away from someone who rightfully paid to park there.
Citations and Appeals
1
Yes! On the back of the citation you received, you will find a website and how to access the appeals process. The appeals process must be submitted online within 10 business days of receiving the citation, and you will generally hear back within a few business days on your appeal outcome. If your first appeal is denied, you do have the option to submit a second level appeal that will be reviewed by an appeals committee. The appeals committee consists of individuals from many different departments on campus, and they review and discuss all appeals individually. A second-level appeal must be submitted online within 10 business days of receiving your first-level determination.
2
You may pay your citation with cash, check, or credit card at the Transportation Services office located on the first floor of the Administration Building. They are open Monday-Friday from 8AM till 5PM during the school year, and 8AM till 4PM during the summer.
If you are paying via credit card, you may also pay for the citation on the parking portal. The link to the parking portal can be found on the back of the citation.
3
Typically when a hold is placed on a student account, once the citation is paid, the hold will be released about 15 to 30 minutes after payment has been received. If the hold stays on and does not release after that timeframe, you can call Transportation Services during normal business hours and we will manually release the hold.
4
Yes. Parking Enforcement Officers cite a vehicle at the time that they witness the infraction. Officers don't know if a vehicle was parked for two minutes or for two hours, that is why it is important to either pay your physical parking meter with quarters or start a ParkMobile session before you leave your vehicle and to ensure that your session is valid for the entire duration of your stay.
