The Sponsored Programs Office can help you with any type of proposal, from new proposals (those being submitted to the sponsor for the first time) to renewals. Each type of proposal, outlined below, may have its own requirements or qualifications.
The purpose of the pre-proposal is to peak the interest of a potential sponsor and is a request for preliminary review prior to a formal or full proposal submission. It typically does not include a cost estimate and is not expected to result in an award. Interested sponsors will ask for a full proposal.
A formal or full proposal submitted for the first time (i.e. an original submission) to a potential sponsor for a specific project or study.
A proposal request for a modification(s) to a previous submission. It modifies a proposal that is pending or is otherwise unfunded, but not officially declined or closed.
A continuation / supplement is a proposal request for one of the following:
- Additional funds for beyond the sponsor approved project period.
- Additional funds for a budget period subsequent to the current award (i.e. a multi-year award). In a multi-year award, the continuation proposal requests the already sponsor approved funds for the next phase (or next year) of the project. Typically, sponsors require a progress report and budget before releasing additional funds.
- New funds to be spent during the current sponsor approved project period to support new or additional activities that were not identified in the current award. This request reflects an expansion of the scope of the contract or grant-approved activities as well as an increase in budget.
