Research in Brief: Explore short stories about the amazing work our researchers do at Michigan Tech every day.

Friendly Eyes in the Sky

Michigan Tech Research Institute

The Michigan Tech Research Institute is using unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, to map and monitor unpaved roads, track conditions inside culverts and on bridges, and monitor potholes. The goal is fewer people heading in to investigate compromised road conditions—which means safer workers and money saved.

Creating Top Crops

Using "small tandem target mimic" (STTM)—a technology of his own making—Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Guiliang Tang is studying genetic processes of maize, rice, and soy. His work, which is funded by a $2.5M NSF grant, could lead to the development of more productive, disease-resistant crops.

Evolving Ultrasounds

Healthcare professionals will be better prepared to read ultrasound elastography images after training with Biomedical Engineering Assistant Professor Jingfeng Jiang's new "virtual breast" software tool, funded by an NIH grant.

Sweet Science

Tarun Dam, assistant professor of chemistry, has unlocked a key to more and better pharmaceuticals: exploiting the functions of the structure of , or sugar biomolecules.
