Flowers are often used to express human emotion. In 1884, Kate Greenaway’s Language of Flowers explored the symbolism of flowers in Victorian England. The book is the basis for this memorial to students and faculty who died while at Michigan Tech. Plant specimens are labeled with floral meaning, common name, and scientific name. Two white firs that existed at the site symbolize “Time,” while the new addition, an imperial honey locust at the center, symbolizes “affection beyond the grave.”
