Planning & Construction provides high-quality master planning, designing, and construction services to Michigan Tech—we meet the project’s scope, schedule, and budget. The department acts as a steward for the University. It plans, designs, and constructs fixed assets, from new and existing buildings, furnishings and equipment to utility infrastructure.

Our engineers:

Design, engineer, do cost estimates, and are responsible for construction of all new and remodeling projects on campus
Write building project programs
Prepare the capital outlay budget
Manage design contracts with architects and engineers, and coordinate design with facility users
Work with the campus community on facility concerns and improvements
Manage construction contracts with all building contractors and construction managers

Capital Outlay Documents

Each year the University submits a five-year capital outlay plan to the State of Michigan.

Use and Finance Reports

Bi-annual use and finance reports include all self-funded construction projects, including land or property acquisitions, remodeling and additions, maintenance projects, roads, landscaping, equipment, telecommunications, utilities, and parking lots and structures costing more than $1 million, as well as projects previously reported whose project cost has changed.

Campus Master Planning

When our on-campus customers contact us to build a project, their focus, understandably, is on that project. Our focus is broad. We try to see each building project within the context of overall campus development.

Our Campus Master Plan 2022 "Build The Future" will guide development of our campus through 2035 and provide a framework for short-term and long-term campus planning. To view the plan and to learn about the planning process, visit Michigan Tech's Campus Master Plan website.

Hazard Mitigation Planning

The Michigan Tech Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan was created in 2008 and updated in 2020. This FEMA-approved plan was created to protect the health and safety of the students, faculty, staff and visitors. It was created to reduce damages to property, research, instruction, and to minimize economic hardship for the university and the surrounding community by identifying the mitigation activities that can be undertaken both by the university and the local area. It was created in accordance with current federal rules and regulations governing local hazard mitigation plans.

A hard copy of the 2020-2025 Michigan Tech Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan is available to view in the Facilities Management department at 100 Facilities Building, Houghton, MI.
