The work to plan and plant northern ecologically sustainable gardens at Michigan Tech began in 2008 when former master gardener, Lynn Watson, with the help of students, developed more than 100 garden sites. Lynn retired in the Fall 2013. In April 2014, master gardener Quincy Higgins Arney took the reins. A corps of student gardeners continue to help the project grow. The latest innovations include blueberry plantings around Husky Plaza and other edibles interspersed throughout campus beds. Her design aesthetic includes native plantings with four-season interest, un-fussy Asian-garden elements that often incorporate rocks, and user-friendly pathways that go with the natural campus traffic flow.
