Dr. Matheson graduated from Michigan Tech in 1973 with a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.S. in Mathematics. He continued his studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and earned an M.S. in Chemistry in 1975 and a PhD in Biophysics in 1978 under Professor Scheraga's guidance. James Spain was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Arlington, Virginia.  At the age of 11, he moved to Florida, and at 17 to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he graduated from High School.  He earned a BS in Chemistry from Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in 1951.  He went on to earn his MS in Biochemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1953 and his PhD in Chemistry . . .

Feifei came to Michigan Tech to study chemistry, earning her PhD in 1994. Her other degrees include both Bachelor and Master degrees in polymeric material science and engineering from East China University of Science and Technology.
