University Website Procedures

These website procedures support Michigan Tech's University Web Policy. Web publishers—whether colleges, departments, or individuals—are responsible for the content of their pages and should become familiar with University policies, as well as applicable federal, state, and local laws.

All Websites

All websites and web pages maintained for any University activity or function, regardless of where they are hosted, must comply with the following Michigan Tech procedures and are subject to a systematic annual review by University Marketing and Communications (UMC). Steps for non-compliance are outlined in Appendix C.

Advertising and Endorsement

Michigan Tech webpages must not endorse commercial websites or accept sponsorship from commercial entities in exchange for web page links.

Specific exceptions may be granted for commercial links supporting the University's purposes and/or providing an essential service to the University community.

Conflict of Interest

Michigan Tech Conflict of Interest Policy regarding the use of University facilities for materials relating to research, consulting, and other professional endeavors must be followed.

Copyrighted and Licensed Resources

Some information and software resources available through the Michigan Tech network are licensed solely for use by the Michigan Tech community. Redistribution of licensed resources to external users is not permitted unless specifically authorized in the license agreement.

Threats or Other Prohibited Uses

Threatening another person is prohibited by University policy. This policy applies to electronic communications, including webpages. Also, webpages may not be used to commit fraudulent behavior, misappropriate someone's identity, or incite others to commit illegal acts.

URL Approval

UMC approves all URLs, subdomains, and alternative domains before creation. UMC will:

  1. Verify that the requester has a valid claim to the URL
  2. Confirm that a new URL is appropriate and that there is no competing URL
    1. A subdomain URL that corresponds to a root URL can still be set up as a vanity URL
  3. Confirm that no confusion over the owner or topic will result from granting the URL
  4. Consider brand, editorial guide, search and generative engine optimization, and industry standards
  5. Provide alternatives as necessary

To have a URL or subdomain approved, submit a URL Request Form or email your request to webmaster@mtu.edu.


mtu.edu Domain and Subdomains

All Michigan Tech websites using the mtu.edu domain and subdomains are additionally required to follow:

and must:

  • Display the Michigan Tech logo, linking back to the main Michigan Tech homepage (www.mtu.edu)
  • Provide contact information. At a minimum, include one of the following:
    1. telephone number
    2. mailing address
    3. email address
  • Link to Michigan Tech's EOE statement in the footer or other global content area

Additional procedures are based on site classification outlined below.

Michigan Tech Homepage

The Michigan Tech homepage is managed by University Marketing and Communications and is intended to be a recruiting tool for our target audiences:

  • Prospective undergraduate students
  • Prospective graduate students
  • Prospective faculty and staff
  • Current students
  • Current faculty and staff
  • Alumni
  • Donors
  • Industry
  • Members of the public

The Michigan Tech homepage must:

  • Display the Michigan Tech logoin the website header
  • Provide links to state and federally required resources
  • Provide a link to email the webmaster

Academic Course Information Page

Information regarding academic courses must be housed within Michigan Tech's Learning Management System (LMS), managed by the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Academic and Administrative Departments

All academic and administrative departments' primary websites must be housed in Modern Campus CMS. Secondary website(s) may be created using any of the site creation options outlined in Appendix B.

Conferences / Events / Special Purpose

Groups can create websites for conferences, special events, and other special purposes using any of the site creation options outlined in Appendix B.

These websites are required to:

  • Clearly identify the responsible owner
  • At a minimum, include the footnote "Hosted by Michigan Tech" and link these words back to the Michigan Tech homepage
    • Displaying and linking the official Michigan Tech logo is preferred.

Faculty / Staff

Faculty and staff can create a website for themselves using options 2-4 from the site creation options outlined in Appendix B.

These websites are required to:

  • Display the Michigan Tech logo with a link back to the Michigan Tech homepage
  • Must not be used to support any organizations unrelated to Michigan Tech

Modern Campus CMS

All websites housed within Modern Campus CMS must have one or more CMS liaisons to manage the daily maintenance. These liaisons must complete the training required by the Accessible Technology Working Group and UMC.

Research Center/Institute

Websites for research centers and institutes officially classified by the Vice President for Research Office must be housed in Modern Campus CMS unless an exception has been approved by UMC.

Research Initiative, Group, or Unit

Research initiatives, groups, and units can create primary or secondary websites using any of the site creation options outlined in Appendix B.

Strategic University Initiatives

Websites related to strategic university initiatives, such as Tech Forward, must be housed in Modern Campus CMS unless an exception has been approved by UMC.

Student Groups and Organizations

Student groups and organizations, including Enterprise teams, can create a website for themselves using options 2-4 from the site creation options outlined in Appendix B.

These websites are required to:

  • Indicate that the group or organization is affiliated with Michigan Tech through the use of an unmodified Michigan Tech logo or text-based statement linking to the Michigan Tech homepage
  • Clearly state the managing student group or organization

All Michigan Tech affiliated websites not on an mtu.edu domain or subdomain are additionally required to:
