The following definitions support Michigan Tech's website procedures:
- Department: Any administrative, academic, or research unit at Michigan Tech.
- Domain: The principle web address associated with an entity, e.g. www.mtu.edu.

Michigan Tech home page: www.mtu.edu.
- Michigan Tech web page: All websites and web pages maintained for any University activity or function, regardless of where they are hosted.
- Primary website: The first-choice website that provides customer information and support for any given entity.
- Secondary website: Any additional website(s) that supplement or extend a primary website. Must have a different root URL or domain from the primary website (e.g. is not a subpage or subsite).
- Subdomain: A extension of the primary domain that creates a new section of the website for niche content, e.g. www.blogs.mtu.edu.
- Web publishers: Anyone with access to edit a Michigan Tech web page.
