Motorist Assistance

Battery Boost     Flat Tire     Stuck

Transportation Services understands that many students are away from home for the first time, and even a minor vehicle issue can feel overwhelming.  We’re here to help!  If your vehicle is experiencing any of the issues listed below, please contact us and we will send an officer to assess the situation and assist in any way possible.  Courtesy Patrol Officers will respond to all of campus (including Mont Ripley, Portage Lake Golf Course, Lakeshore Center, Outdoor Trails, and the Keweenaw Research Center) to assist the entire motoring public.  Students, employees, and visitors to campus are all eligible for this program.

Do you have a flat tire?

We can air your tire up for you with one of our cordless air compressors.  If you need a tire changed, we
will assist you in any means necessary or instruct you on how to change it yourself.
Parking Officers cannot replace a flat tire and/or install a spare tire themselves.  The driver is required to assist.

Need a battery boost?

Our Courtesy Patrol Vehicles are equipped with portable battery jump packs capable of starting vehicles
as small as a snowmobile or motorcycle and up to as heavy duty as a diesel truck.

Did you run out of gas?

We will provide you with one gallon of gasoline or diesel fuel and then escort you to the nearest gas station.

Is your vehicle stuck?

Transportation Services will respond and provide a shovel and assist to free your vehicle.  We can also deploy
traction material around your drive tires for vehicles that are stuck on ice.
Parking Officers cannot "push" a vehicle nor can they hook up a strap/chain and "pull" the vehicle.

Are your door locks frozen?

All of our Courtesy Patrol Vehicles carry Lock De-Icer in them.  One squirt typically resolves the issue, but for
extremely frozen door locks, we also have a battery operated heat gun.

Did your vehicle break down?
Although Parking Officers cannot repair your vehicle, they can help with advice, suggestions, and guide
you towards reputable and local businesses who may be able to better assist you.  Parking Officers can
also assist you with traffic control if your vehicle has broken down in the roadway.

Was there a blue Courtesy Card left on your windshield?
During routine courtesy patrols, our parking enforcement officers remain attentive to any issues or concerns
involving parked vehicles. If an officer observes a flat tire, lights left on, an open door or window, or any other
condition that warrants notifying the owner, they will place a blue card on the windshield to provide notice. In
addition, Transportation Services front office staff will follow up via email to inform the owner and offer
     assistance in resolving the issue.
