All Summer Youth Programs include course tuition and meals. Participants can stay
overnight in the Michigan Tech residence halls, or stay off-campus with a friend or
family member. More information is included below.
Residential (or “live-in”) students stay in Wadsworth Hall (“Wads”), during their time at SYP. Live-in students also receive a meal plan for
the week, and linens are provided in each room.
During Summer Youth Programs, we control two floors of Wads: only SYP students and
staff with designated access can swipe into our floors. Additionally, male and female
students will stay on separate secure floors.
We divide students into smaller groups (“halls”), each with a Residence Counselor
assigned to them. The RCs are the ones who check in with students each evening, host
hall meetings, and make sure that everyone is doing well.
SYP is a great opportunity to meet new people, and we take care to match students
with roommates who are similar in age but different in other areas (like geographic
area, for example). If you want to stay with a sibling or friend, you must indicate
so in the Confirmation Packet you'll receive after acceptance. Remember, both you
and your friend must request each other on your forms or you will not be placed together.
Wondering what to bring for a week in Wadsworth Hall? Check out our what to pack page to learn more. Additional information will also be sent with your Welcome Packet
in the weeks leading up to your program.
The live-in cost for this summer is $995 and includes course tuition, program fees, meals, room, and board—see tuition and fees for more information.
Commuter students attend camps/explorations during the day, but stay off-campus with
a friend or family member in the Houghton area during the evenings. Some commuters
are local students, while others stay with family, for example camping or in a hotel.
The Summer Youth Programs office will need the student's local address and phone number,
and the participant must agree to follow all live-in student rules while on campus.
Several of our explorations involve travel or late-evening activities and are not
available to commuters, so be sure to note if a program is live-in only!
Commuter students receive a meal plan that covers their lunches each weekday. In addition,
commuters are welcome to stay after class and participate in the evening activities
and games with other participants, however, they must purchase a dining hall pass
from the SYP front desk to eat dinner.
The commuter cost for this summer starts at $600 and includes course tuition, program fees, and meals—see tuition and fees for more information.
Can’t choose just one exploration? No problem! Every summer, some students register
for more than one week of SYP and spend a few weeks with us. Over the weekend(s),
you will be able to keep your housing, meal plan, and supervision. In addition, we
make sure that stayover students get to experience the Upper Peninsula through activities
such as:
- Tours of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
- Hiking at Porcupine Mountains State Park
- Adventure Mine tours
- Going to the movies and local beaches
- Attending local festivals or events
If you’re staying with us over the weekend, a stayover fee of $150 per weekend will cover room and board, supervision, meals (both in the dining hall and during
away trips), and any applicable excursion expenses. We try our best to make sure that
stayover participants keep the same room, but we cannot guarantee this. Stayovers
are not permitted between SYP 2 and SYP 3 due to the 4th of July holiday.
Both live-in and commuter students may opt to drive themselves to campus. However,
please be aware that:
- Any student bringing a vehicle will be responsible for purchasing a parking pass ($20 per week) from the SYP front desk.
- Live-in students will not be permitted to drive during the week; your keys must be
turned in to the SYP front desk and will be securely stored.
Check out travel for more information.
“Other students need to attend SYP for so many reasons! The strong friendships made
during SYP are indescribable, the counselors are fun and energetic, the teachers are
knowledgeable and make class excited, and the programs are diverse and ignite a deep
passion for a future in the STEM field! The energy every day at SYP is astounding.
People coming together from across the globe to learn in such a great environment
is what truly makes SYP unforgettable.”Madeline B., NSTI Participant
