Check-In
- Program registration for live-in participants is offered on the Sunday of each program week from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. in Wadsworth Hall on Michigan Tech’s campus.
- Commuter participants should check-in after 12:30 p.m. and plan to stay on campus for orientation activities through at least 4 p.m., although you're welcome to stay for dinner and evening activities!
- If you require an exception for early or later check-in times, please register for the appropriate Early Arrival section in CampDoc. Please note that Early Arrival cannot be accommodated on June 13 or July 4.
- If you are arriving by plane or SYP charter bus, your check-in will be offered upon your arrival.
- If you arrive by car, there will be sandwich board signs on US-41 indicating where to pull in at the Wadsworth Hall parking lot. Counselors will be there to greet you car-side and help you with the check-in process.
- For the students who arrive on the charter bus, you will arrive on campus around 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. An SYP counselor will meet you at the bus and help you with the check-in process.
- If you arrive by plane and have requested our airport shuttle, SYP staff will meet you at the airport and drive you to campus. See travel for more information about these ways to arrive.
Check-in runs from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on the Sunday of each program week. You must check in before moving into your room!
- If you are self-transporting to SYP you MUST turn your vehicle keys in at the time of check-in. Keys will be returned during the check-out process.
- If you bring any medicine to camp (prescription or over-the-counter), it must be checked in at the SYP front desk. Our front desk staff will use your Student Profile
in CampDoc to determine what medications you take and when.
- It is the participant's responsibility to go to the desk to get medications when needed.
- The front desk also has some basic over-the-counter medicines available if needed. To receive over-the-counter medications, they need to be approved for distribution by a parent/guardian and documented in your Student Profile.
- Medications will be collected by our staff at your car-side check-in. Please have
medications easily accessible at that time.
- Note: epi-pens, insulin, inhalers, and birth control do not need to be checked in at our front desk.
- The SYP front desk has a safe available if students wish to store valuables such as keys, jewelry, or extra spending cash. Students are expected to keep their rooms locked when they are away. Summer Youth Programs is not responsible for lost or stolen property.
- Once live-in participants are checked in, they can move their luggage into their room.
- Counselors will be there to answer questions and help show you where your room is.
- An elevator is available on the first floor to get your luggage to your room.
- This is your time to unpack, get comfortable, and meet your roommate before activities begin!
- Once you have settled in, head down to the launch pad for activities before orientation begins.
Check Out
- Program check-out is offered on Friday of each program week from 5 p.m.–9 p.m.
- Please note that our peak check-out window is from 5 p.m.–6 p.m. Please be patient during this time as it may take longer to complete the check-out process.
- To ensure the smoothest possible check-out, please assist our staff by cleaning your room, packing, and getting a counselor to sign off on your room by the end of lunch time on Friday.
Late check-out is available on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon with an additional fee of $75. If you need to request an early or late check-out time, please register for the appropriate Late Departure session in CampDoc. Note: Late Departures cannot be accommodated on July 2 or July 17.
- You will need to clean your room before leaving SYP:
- Pack all your belongings
- Pick up and take out any trash
- Vacuum if needed
- Pull the linens from your bed and place them in the hallway
- Leave the pillow on the bed with the pillowcase removed
- Place your towel and washcloth in the hall with your bed linens
- To ensure a smooth check-out, this process should be started on Thursday evening.
- Make sure to check every drawer and under your bed for any forgotten items!
- Live-in participants: once you've packed and cleaned your room, you can ask a counselor
to check its condition. They will go over a checklist to make sure that nothing is
damaged, broken, or missing and sign off that your room looks good.
- This process should be started Thursday night and can be completed as early as lunch time on Friday.
- Friday after class, you can visit the sign-out station on your floor, turn in your key and room condition sheet, and sign out of camp.
- Make sure to visit the front desk to collect your medicine and valuables before you leave! If you arrived by car or with your family, one of your authorized release adults will need to sign you out with our staff—then you are free to go.
- If you have a flight out of Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX), an SYP staff member will ensure you arrive at the airport in time for your flight. Your residence counselor can answer any questions you have about your flight plans.
- If you are a commuter participant, make sure to indicate when you leave the program on Friday in the Commuter Sign-in/Sign-out book located at the front desk.
- If you self-transported to SYP, you MUST check out with the front desk before leaving and obtain your vehicle keys.
- If you are riding the charter bus home, it leaves Michigan Tech around 10 p.m. Friday nights.
- You need to be checked out of your room by 8 p.m. that evening.
- Your luggage can be securely stored in the dining hall between the time that you check out of your room and when you need to load the bus.
- A bus chaperone will take roll to make sure everyone is on board, and then you will head home.
