It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology. If you are fascinated by human health and physiology, or have a passion for fitness and sports industry, bring your interests together with study in our department. Our faculty are national and international scholars in the respective fields, and have a strong commitment to engaging students in their research projects.
We currently offer two undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees. Our most sought-after degrees is the BS in Exercise Science, which most students use as the necessary foundation to apply to physical therapy school, medical school, physician assistant school, and other health professions graduate education. However, we also have students pursue the BS in Exercise Science for immediate careers in cardiac rehabilitation, fitness industry, strength and conditioning, and other employment.
The BS in Sports and Fitness Management offers a unique blend of health, fitness, sports administration, and business courses that prepare our students for careers in both fitness and sports industries. The degree requires a practical internship, and we’ve had students do rotations with collegiate and professional sports teams, including recent internships with the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers. Students use the BS in Sports and Fitness Management as a foundation for a graduate degree focused on strength and conditioning or sports administration. Additionally, minors in Public Health and Coaching are offered to enrich the BS degrees.
Our most recent degree is the PhD in Integrative Physiology, which includes a system-level approach to understand the role of physiology in human health. We offer a course-work or thesis option, and students from several Michigan Tech undergraduate degrees are eligible for the accelerated MS option.
Lastly, we have established a partnership with the Central Michigan University Doctorate Physical Therapy (DPT) program. This unique partnership has created a satellite DPT program on Michigan Tech’s campus, with some early admission opportunities for our own undergraduate students. Moreover, many of these DPT students in the CMU program are engaged in departmental research, enabling exciting and multi-disciplinary research groups.
We hope you’ll explore the many benefits of our innovative and niche program here at Michigan Tech. Tomorrow needs you.
