Google Workspace for Education
Michigan Tech has partnered with Google, a world-class email, calendaring, and collaboration service, to provide you with your @mtu.edu email address, as well as a range of other collaboration tools.
Google is Michigan Tech's email provider. This system connects all faculty, staff, students, alumni, prospective students, emeriti, and adjunct faculty, among others.
Gmail Workspace for Education offers storage per user, powerful spam filtering, integrated voice/video conferencing, and a 99.9% uptime SLA. Hosted by Google, there is no cost and no ads for students, faculty, or staff. Gmail is securely powered by the web, so students and faculty can be productive at home, on the road, or on their mobile devices.
We offer support for configuring and troubleshooting for a range of email clients. Instructions are available on how to add your account to your mobile device. Links to individual services such as Calendar, Contacts, etc. will appear at the top right of the page upon sign-in.
Google Calendar enables users to easily schedule meetings, share event calendars, and stay organized – no matter how busy their days are. You can overlay multiple calendars to see when people are available, while Google Calendar sends invitations and manages RSVPs. Google Calendar is integrated into Gmail and interoperable with popular calendar applications. Calendars can be shared school-wide or with select colleagues. A range of sharing permission controls helps maintain security and privacy. View and edit event details, add new events, and invite guests on mobile devices. You can also receive calendar notifications via SMS.
Google Drive is your place to keep single, up-to-date versions of all of your files online. Access your files from anywhere with Google Drive on your Mac, PC, or mobile device (or your browser!).
In addition to any file type you choose to upload, Google Docs are also stored in Google Drive. Share individual files or whole folders with specific people or your entire team. Develop new ideas with your team and move projects together more efficiently with online discussions on any file. As with all Google Apps, this application includes Google's powerful searching capabilities to help you find what you are looking for.
Access to Google Drive and Google Photos expires 120 days after you’re no longer a student. The contents of these folders are erased at that time. Visit our knowledge base for information on how to download or transfer your data.
Collaborate and learn in real-time with Google Docs: web-based documents, spreadsheets, drawings, and presentations that let users edit the same file at the same time, so you always have the latest version. Google Docs helps users be productive at school, at home, and even on their mobile phones. Because Google Docs runs in a web browser, students can work from almost any family computer without having to purchase new software.
Michigan Tech uses Google Groups to provide email list services for the campus. Google Groups is also the best way to use email lists with Google's other collaboration tools. A properly-configured Google Group can accept Google Calendar invites and items shared via Google Drive in an intelligent way.
Please refer to Google's documentation for information on using Google Groups. To view the groups of which you're currently a member or to manage your groups or create new ones, please visit the "My Groups" section of Google Groups. Group creations are audited for abuse and compliance with Michigan Tech's computer use policy.
