Photography
Every day, people on campus use photos to share their experiences with one another. From photos of campus life to innovative research, we ensure that images representing the University do so in a way that accurately reflects Michigan Tech’s standards.
- Our images are well-composed and give an authentic look into who we are and what we do.
- Our images are well-lit. Light should be flattering to the subject, and images that are too dark or too bright should be corrected before use.
- Our images are sharp and in focus. When viewers see them, there should be no question about what they’re looking at.
- Our images are properly sized for their intended format. Photos should look as good in their final form as they do on a screen. The aspect ratio and pixels per inch (PPI) should align with the final product.
- Our images are not color-mute. Make sure the colors enhance the visual experience of the photo. Do not overly contrast our images, and keep a realistic white point and black point in the images.

Videography
Michigan Tech is always in motion—and our videos should be, too. Whether it’s a quick student-recorded clip or a polished ad spot, our content reflects who we are: real people doing meaningful work in a place unlike anywhere else.
Our video style is straightforward and energetic. It doesn’t matter if the footage comes from a phone or a studio camera—what matters is the story. We focus on what students are doing, how they’re doing it, and why it matters. From leading research in the lab to hiking through the Keweenaw after class, our stories show—not tell— what it means to be a Husky.
Student voices are at the center of it all. Their words carry weight, because they’re honest. Unscripted interviews and spontaneous mobile footage feel natural, and they connect. Whether filmed vertically, horizontally, or square, these formats work because they’re personal, approachable, and real.
We don’t need to say that Michigan Tech is innovative or welcoming—our videos should show it, one moment at a time.
Our campus is a place of beauty and discovery—and our videos reflect that. We lean into natural light and vivid colors to show off both our surroundings and the work happening within them. Wide landscape shots help set the scene. Up close, we focus on people— collaborating in the lab, testing new ideas, or explaining big concepts in simple ways.
We’re curious about the work our researchers do. But we’re even more interested in why they do it, and who they are. That’s why we use wide lenses for tight shots in labs and classrooms—to put the people behind the work at the center of the story.
When we share knowledge, we keep it clear and honest. Our goal is to teach something new and spark curiosity. We don’t exaggerate or overpromise. We use sharp titles and simple thumbnails that invite viewers in—and then deliver.
