9.6.9 A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum

The A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum of Michigan Tech is one of North America's premier mineral museums and is nationally and internationally recognized by mineral collectors and connoisseurs. Minerals from around the world are on exhibit in Thomas D. Shaffner Exhibit Hall. The Phyllis and John Seaman Garden features plants and rocks from the Great Lakes region and the Copper Pavilion features the Guinness world record holding 19-ton lake copper recovered from the bottomlands of Lake Superior. The A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum is the official mineral museum of the State of Michigan.

Michigan Tech's mineral collection includes the world's finest collection of Michigan minerals, especially minerals from the Keweenaw Peninsula including crystallized native copper and native copper in calcite. It is notable for the quality, depth, and breadth of minerals from the Great Lakes region. The museum advertises itself as the Mineral Museum of the Great Lakes region. In addition to minerals from the region, Michigan Tech's mineral collection contains outstanding minerals from around the world.

The A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum houses, curates, and exhibits the University of Michigan's mineral collection through the Michigan Mineral Alliance. This unique alliance between Michigan Tech and the University of Michigan preserves the legacy of the University of Michigan's mineral collection through co-ownership and shared responsibility. Among specimens on exhibit and in the museum's holdings are examples of the finest specimen of an individual mineral species, specimen from which the mineral was discovered, and those notable for their historical significance. The museum's mineral exhibits are organized around five educational themes with each theme supported by several galleries. "Minerals as Natural Masterpieces" is the theme that encompasses all of the museum's exhibits.

The museum is located at 1404 E. Sharon Avenue near Michigan Tech athletic fields. With advance notice, guided tours are available for Michigan Tech employees with professional guests. Regular public admission fee is currently waived for Michigan Tech employees, employee's professional guests, and students with ID.
