“Michigan Tech offered me the opportunity to pursue my interest in the environment and combined it with my love of math through the environmental engineering program.”

As soon as she got to Michigan Tech, Krissy Guzak ’10 ’12 quickly learned about Engineers Without Borders and attended her first meeting. She then attended a subteam meeting for a new water filtration project being started in Bolivia. She and her friend Kim (Landick) Bartell became team leads. “It was my first international experience, and I’m forever grateful for the opportunity. It broadened my horizons and gave me a better perspective on the world we live in.”

“The practical, hands-on team projects that my classes required, the unique extracurricular activities available, along with the close-knit culture Michigan Tech provides, enabled me to seek out opportunities and to build a community that helps to encourage and inspire me wherever I go.”

After graduation, Guzak started at Ford in the Vehicle Homologation and Compliance Office as a Safety Standards Engineer. Next, she transitioned to the Environmental Quality Office where she worked on the Paint Emissions Reporting System along with maintaining the waste subject matter expert role, working to reduce waste to landfill and overall waste production. She has since moved back to the Vehicle Homologation and Compliance Office where she works on Export Fuel Economy labels. “I’ve had some really great experiences in these roles and have really enjoyed getting a broader perspective on the company.”

Guzak’s advice to students is, “Don’t be your own worst critic. Go after the things you want even when they seem too lofty.”
