National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (GRFP)

The Michigan Tech Graduate School provides dedicated resources, workshops, and one-on-one writing support for students applying to the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP).

Program Overview

The NSF GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees.

Fellowship Benefits

Note: NSF GRFP Fellowships are open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents only.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the NSF GRFP, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.

  • Have never previously applied to the GRFP while enrolled in a graduate degree program.

  • Have never earned a master’s or professional degree in any field.

  • Have completed no more than one academic year in a graduate degree-granting program.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the official NSF deadlines for their specific field of study well in advance of the deadline week.

The Graduate School hosts interactive workshops for prospective applicants and faculty reference letter writers. All sessions are presented by Lea Marlor, Graduate Academic Coordinator.

    • When: Wednesday, Sept. 23 | 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

    • Details: Overview of fellowship components, eligibility, and strategies for a competitive application.

    • When: Monday, Sept. 28 | 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

    • Details: Deep dive into structure, content, and organization for Personal and Research Statements.

  • NSF GRFP Reference Letter Writer’s Workshop

Writing Support & Drop-In Office Hours

Get direct feedback and one-on-one writing support for your application materials.

  • Location: Library Lobby Exhibit Space

  • Schedule:
    • Tuesday Schedule: 9/22 (2–3:30 p.m.), 9/29 (3–4:30 p.m.), 10/6 (10–11:30 a.m.), and 10/13 (1–2:30 p.m.)
    • Friday Schedule: 9/18 through 10/16 (9:30–11 a.m.)
