Current research projects in the department pursue new knowledge and technological
advancements in the chemical sciences and engineering. Areas of interest include process
safety, process systems engineering, applied thermodynamics, polymers, mineral processing,
and biochemical engineering. Many investigations are being driven by University initiatives
in sustainability, biotechnology, and alternative energy.
The department’s level of external funding is currently at $3 million. Chemical and
materials industries and federal and state agencies—including the National Science
Foundation, the Department of Education, the National Institutes of Health, and the
US Department of Energy—support the department’s research programs.
