Jessica Engwis Swan

- BS Electrical Engineering 2008
From her time as a student at Michigan Tech throughout her professional career, Jessica Engwis Swan has dedicated her life and career to the excellence of women in STEM.
Swan chose Michigan Tech because of its reputation as a premier engineering school and its small town feel. She graduated from Michigan Tech in 2008 with her BS in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Spanish. In addition to her Tech degree, Swan earned her master’s in information technology - software engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2013.
Michigan Tech impacted Swan’s life in many ways. In addition to meeting her husband in the Motor Controls Lab, she found sisterhood in Alpha Gamma Delta and held positions of treasurer and property management in the sorority. Today, she is an advisor for Alpha Gamma Delta - Zeta Epsilon. Additionally, as a Tech student, Swan attended a career fair where she connected with General Motors (GM)—the company where she would complete her first internship and continue her professional career for 17 years and counting.
Swan started at GM as a transmission software design leader and software engineer where she led her team to complete software and testing on time to support software build and delivery. While she was the youngest person on the team, she received the Team GM Award for her leadership in seamlessly transitioning the team to Transmission Rational Team Concert training. From there, she has been promoted to a variety of positions.
In her current role as Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) relationship manager, Swan is the main liaison for all engagements between SAE and GM, including technical standards participation, conference sponsorship and presence, and volunteering endeavors. In addition to successfully appointing a new leader for high-voltage charging standards and regulations at the company, Swan has led GM’s presence at annual conferences, increased staffing of GM experts on standards committees, and much more. She received the SAE International Top Contributor of the Year Award in 2023.
Throughout her career at GM, Swan has been passionate about learning, excelling at her job, and giving back to the community. She has been an engaged member of the GM Women Employee Resource Group, serving as the global product development talent pillar lead and the global product development business planner.
Swan has been a life member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) for the past 17 years. She first became involved with the organization through SWE’s Girls’ Engineering Exploration,an outreach program in Detroit, and has since served in the roles of vice president of outreach, treasurer, and president. Under her leadership, Swan made major improvements within the SWE organization, including the implementation of a digital depository and reimbursement system and creating an annual report which was then used to obtain corporate sponsorship.
Outside of her work and volunteer leadership positions, Swan volunteers with animal rescues where her time permits and is very much involved with her children’s schooling and activities. Together with her children and husband, Charles, Swan resides in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
In recognition of her career achievements, volunteerism, and involvement with Michigan Tech and her community, Swan will be inducted into Michigan Tech’s Presidential Council of Alumnae in November 2025.
